I don't think we needed a winning player from a winning program that is known for turning out successful players. At least not on this roster.

The thinking behind drafting Balkman at that point was "Who fills a need now as the team is presently constituted?"

As opposed to "Who will help this team when it's ready to compete in the future?"

There's no other way that you would select a potentially above average starting PG over a role player.

This isn't what a person, who is looking out for the best interests of the franchise, does. It's what a person who is looking out for their best interests does.

if we drafted MW he never would have played. We would have never seen his potential. There is no point in lamenting, MW had no place on the knicks. He wouls have just ridden out his rookie contract and bounced.

In some ways I agree. Williams is playing well on NJ because that team is built to maximize his skills and they have a need for a backup PG to play 10-20 minutes a game. They are giving Williams all the run he can handle. If he were on the Knicks, he would be battling Nate for playing time and IT would be trying to give Marbury, Francis, or Nate away to clear the logjam. Moreover, it was clear that Williams was on a mission tonight. He wanted to prove to the Knicks that they made a mistake passing on him. He had a good game and looks like a good player, but we just need to move on with the players we have. I like Balkman and think that in time, he will make us forget about (or at least not bring it up ever other day) passing on Williams.
