If computers ran the NBA, Shaq would be benched

Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade (L) and center Shaquille O'Neal sit on the bench during pre-season NBA basketball action against the New Orleans/Okalahoma City Hornets in Miami, Florida, October 17, 2006. According to a new statistical measurement developed by Lenovo Group Ltd., the world's third-largest personal computer maker, O'Neal should have been benched in this year's National Basketball Association championships.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Shaquille O'Neal may be one of the best basketball players on the planet, but he should have been benched in this year's National Basketball Association championships.

Or so concludes a new statistical measurement developed by Lenovo Group Ltd. the world's third-largest personal computer maker. Introduced by Lenovo and the NBA on Monday, the statistic is supposed show which five players combine to make the best team on the court at any one time.

In June's NBA finals, for instance, the Lenovo Stat showed the best combination for the champion Miami Heat included Dwyane Wade, James Posey, Gary Payton, Antoine Walker, and Alonzo Mourning.

Missing from the list is O'Neal, the 7'1" Miami Heat center who is an 11-times NBA All-Star and named one of the 50 Greatest Players in league history. But it was with Mourning -- rather than O'Neal -- that the Heat had the greatest point advantage during the championships, according to the Lenovo Stat.

Lenovo is launching the statistic as part of a new multi-year marketing partnership with the NBA. Under the partnership, Lenovo will place notebook and desktop computers in all 30 NBA arenas for use by coaches and referees.

NBA Commissioner David Stern, who said the statistic would give coaches "enormous additional data," declined to comment on the conclusion about O'Neal.

"Shaq is a friend of mine," he joked.
I LOVED how Curry just exploded in the 4th, speaking as a fan of the Raptors, Curry looked well, scary I think is the word. Or Shaq-like Curry: 19.1ppg-7.3rpg-58%fg

Correction, this is why you don't judge things by what the media says. They're good at writing snappy headlines but terrible at complicated things like grasping concepts.

Um, Shaq had a bad series in that series, no question about it. You can't predict he's going to have a bad series, going in. This actually proves two fundamentals: Past performance doesn't GUARANTEE future success, and not to use limited sample sizes. That being said, most of the time the stats give a good benchmark. They're not perfect, but not useless either.

Stats are alright, but the MOST useful thing is observing what's going on with your own 2 eyes. If it helps, watch a specific player more than the game itself, just to get an idea of what he does. You can really learn some things that way.

Stats are invaluable, but they only have meaning if they are viewed in the proper context.
