Renaldo Balkman Interview

By InsideHoops.com | Oct. 26, 2006
With the 20th pick in the first round of the 2006 NBA Draft, the New York Knicks picked Renaldo Balkman. The 6-8, 210-pound small forward from South Carolina has won Knicks fans over with his energic play. InsideHoops.com recently met with Balkman for an exclusive interview.

InsideHoops.com: Talk about bringing energy. You're doing it, just like Isiah Thomas and the team hoped you'd be able to do.

Renaldo Balkman: That was my goal, coming in. Work hard. Tough. Go out and do whatever so they can feel my presense out there on the floor.

InsideHoops.com: Do you feel like you have something to prove, as far as being drafted as high as you were?

Renaldo Balkman: Naw. The negativity has turned into a positive to me. All the negatives, talking about, who is this guy... it's positive, and now I'm here, showing them what I can do.

InsideHoops.com: The crowd loves you. Are you feeling their energy?

Renaldo Balkman: I love crowd energy. That makes me go. I'm a fan favorite. I come from a college where I was a fan favorite, and hopefully carrying that to the NBA.

InsideHoops.com: How does that happen for you, becoming a fan favorite?

Renaldo Balkman: As far as that goes, doing the dirty work. What I'm supposed to be doing. That's how you become a fan favorite.

InsideHoops.com: You move without the ball a lot. More than most players on the team and in the league. You and David Lee are terrific at moving and hitting the right spots at the right times.

Renaldo Balkman: It's just playing hard. That goes with playing hard. That's what me and David Lee do best, go out there and play ahrd.

InsideHoops.com: Any part of your game that you think will surprise the fans? Some skills you haven't gotten to show yet?

Renaldo Balkman: They'll see it in time.

InsideHoops.com: What current NBA vets do you think you might someday compare to? Or maybe compare to right now.

Renaldo Balkman: I can't really name nobody right now, but I just go out there and play my game. It's about me, not about comparing me to nobody else. When I was in college, when I was in high school I was comparing, but now, I'm here now. So they have to compare to me.

InsideHoops.com: So it's about just being Renaldo.

Renaldo Balkman: Just be me.

I love this guy, he and Lee remind me of the mid 90's knick's player.

JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

He's going to be alot better that JYD. This kid has additional skills beyond just hustling and playing defense. He will really help this offense with his ability to dribble and go one-on-one.

Nate-Crawford-Renaldo-Lee-Frye,

All Kids, All the time.

In addition to your young group above, I think Jamal, Naldo, Jared, Lee and Frye would be a tough defensive unit. This could be for short stretches when we need to get a stop at the end of Qtrs or games.

let's not mix up "tough defensive unit" with "uptempo and disruptive unit". Jamal, Naldo, Lee, Nate and Frye have yet to prove they can stop anyone.

Hmmm, JYD wasn't very good for us. We wound up bringing Malik Rose in because JYD wasn't getting it done. Then JYD retired. I see him as eventually becoming a Shandon Anderson, who I think is better than JYD was.

Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

dnt say dumb things like that...
DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

and don't say dumber things like that. Bring something intelligent to the table. Do you enjoy saying things like that?

i think u're selling JYD very short... there were times when he came on the floor & entirely changed the outcome of the game w/his energy & defense alone... i can't remember 1 time where Malik did that.

again, i'm not talking about Balkman's upside being JYD... i'm talking about how he's going to put a charge into the garden crowd when he's on the floor... JYD was 1 of those guys that got you into the game when he made a hustle play... Nate Robinson is the same way.

What is dumb about that statement? Have you actually watched any of the games. I have seen JYD play a number of times and have watched every SL and preseason game Balkman has played in that was on TV, and IMO Balkman will be a better player than JYD. I don't even know what your point is in making such a statement. This forum is for intelligent conversation not ignorant attacks on people.

Ok, fair from that perspective, that JYD brought energy. I liked JYD, but he was not good for us. Neither was Malik, but that's a different stoory entirely. Hopefully Balkman will make the most of JJ2 being out and bring some energy and develop into a good role player.

Balkman will excel on the knicks when they play as a team offensively and defensively.

This one on one crap won't bring out the best in RENALDO BALKMAN.
