MARBURY'S TAKING SHOT AT TV SHOW
By MARC BERMAN

October 23, 2006 -- Stephon Marbury has shown he can sell sneakers. Now he's trying to sell his own TV talk show.

The Post has learned Marbury has filmed a handful of demo shows, including a one-hour interview with Kobe Bryant. His reps have been shopping the show around.

"We just haven't taken anything," Marbury told The Post. "We've had offers. We're looking for the right deal."

Marbury can be a tough interview when he's displeased with the tone of certain questions. But he feels he's a good interviewer, despite not taking any broadcast journalism courses in his one year at Georgia Tech.

"It's fun," Marbury said. "It's a lot of easier to speak to basketball players. I get certain things out of them because you're going through the same things that they're going through. The lives that we live is different than anyone else. You can relate to the person you're speaking to better than you [the media]. It was a great interview [with Kobe]. A lot of things people wouldn't be able to get from [Kobe], I can."

Marbury's demo shows also include lengthy interviews with Chauncey Billups and teammate Steve Francis. Marbury has a future gig lined up with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

Upon guidance from Isiah Thomas, Marbury is trying to broaden his horizons, create a more likeable image, and his $15 sneaker campaign to low-income families was a start.

Thomas said last week Marbury had "put on that hard layer, that hard, tough guy. But deep down inside, you're a nice guy. What I've tried to explain to him, it's OK to be the nice guy you really are, as opposed to carry the armor."

Said Marbury, "I've had to defend myself more than the normal human being, and you have your hands up," Marbury said. "But it's not worth the fight anymore. I've won in the game of life."

Last Friday, Marbury become incensed at a series of questions about his feelings on the Sebastian Telfair saga and eventually stormed off.

Asked how he would have handled it as a talk-show host, Marbury said, "There are some things you don't ask. I'm not that dirty. My little cousin had a gun to his head. If someone put a gun to your wife's head and she got robbed, would you want someone antagonizing you about that? Ask it once and move on. That [stuff] is for real, and maybe you guys can't understand that because you've never lived around it."

that's a presumption of the Knicks winning games, so yes it does matter. Win games and then you can play at other things.

4 time NBA champion. Stephon should be concentrating on nothing but basketball right now.

Who cares what he does in his offtime? I thought he wasnt even the centerpiece of the team anymore. Isnt that what the marbury haters wanted?
Do you want him to act like the centerpiece of the team when he isnt? Did he miss a practice to shoot the test shows for his lame talk show? Does selling sneakers make him less a ball player? (Tho it would have been nice if had come to camp early i admit)

But cmon man give the guy a break.

Of course if any of us suggested his high profile maneuvers were orchestrated to bolster his image we'd be told our hate has no bounds.

Off time? Did you miss the part where he didn't come to camp early because he was concentrating on his shoe line?

Apparently....and you were also the one that called this his off time. Camps started a couple weeks ago and Marbury didn't take his mentor's invitation and come to camp. Point being-this is NOT his off time.

Are you guys concentrating on everything but basketball?
Did he come in in shape? Is he doing what the coach asks?
Lets wait til our first regular season game before we start claiming players are not focussing on basketball.

Next thing you know you'll see a picture of him with his kids and you guys will yell about him needing to be reading the playbook instead of playing with his daughter. After all, he doesn't get paid to be a family man!!!

Oh, yeah, making a TV show and interviewing other basketball players-while you are still a player which screams of credibility-really is comparable to spending time with your kids.

I really don't understand fans who defend Marbury in situations like this.

What track record does he have to suggest that he'll be successful with even less time focusing on basketball?

What you're basically saying is, "I think its cool he's diversifying his portfolio a bit, sure it takes away from his concentration on basketball, but hey he may still be good so I like it"

I just don't get it. Its ok to say, "I don't think he's a bad person for this, but man I wish he would just play ball and focus on winning without any outside agendas infringing on his time" - its ok to want a professional athlete who gets paid 20 million to dedicate himself 100% to his team.

the knicks aren't winning games? also, I'm reserving the right to bash steph until the season starts...if he thinks he can be like Tiki Barber and have outside endeavors and not win a championship, he's sorely mistaken.

Nooooo way. You've gone this deep, you might as well finish and just admit you've been wrong. First off, Stephon is not in Tiki Barber's league. Secondly, Tiki has worked on his biggest flaw and completely wiped it away. Fumbles. Stephon is the same player as he was 5 years ago, and his defense is no better, and he's still a poor leader.

Tiki didn't win the superbowl (You never know for this year though!) but he has given the Giants EVERYTHING he's got and has become one of the top 3 NFL running backs, no questions or debates. Stephon has taken a nosedive and if his defense is as bad as I think it might be this year, you can count on Isiah to be fired by Christmas, and I betcha Grunwald is going with him. So please, for the sake of all Giants fans in the world, never ever put Tiki Barber in the same sentence as Stephon Marbury.
