Attention NBA shoppers. The Latrell Sprewell comeback/shopping tour is now in full swing. Spree put up his second solid performance Monday night against the Pistons amidst growing trade rumors.
The latest, according to a source inside the Pistons, has Detroit considering making a run for Spree. The Pistons have been wonderful defensively, but the team is struggling mightily to put up points. Several top Pistons scouts were on hand to watch the Knicks-Pistons game, and according to the source, there's a growing feeling inside the club to make a play for Spree.
According to the source, the Pistons would be willing to package Clifford Robinson ($8.4 million), Corliss Williamson ($4.5 million) and Hubert Davis ($2.6 million) in return for Spree. The Knicks would have to use their disabled player exception to fit Davis' salary into the package. The feeling is that Spree would give the team the scoring, toughness and fourth-quarter savvy to make a deep run in the playoffs. Right now the club is ranked 25th in the in points scored.
The Pistons have been trying to clear cap room for next summer's free-agent frenzy. Losing Robinson would hurt. His $8.4 million salary comes off the books next summer, giving the Pistons around $10 million in cap space. However, if they can move Williamson and Davis as part of the package, they'll still have roughly $8 million in cap space next summer.
That may be the best offer the Knicks will see. The move saves them money in the short term and gives them an explosive scorer in Willlamson to fill Spree's void. The clock is ticking. The Knicks have until Dec. 2nd to use the disabled player exception and most of the rumors flying around are starting to get old.
The N.Y. Post is reporting today that the Blazers are still trying to pawn Damon Stoudamire off on the Knicks. That one's been out there for a while. The Knicks have been trying to get either Dale Davis or Derek Anderson as part of the trade, but talks appear to not be progressing.
The N.Y. Daily News is reporting that GM Scott Layden has had recent talks with talks with Memphis about Stromile Swift and Lorenzen Wright. It's not secret that Swift has been on the block all summer, but it's hard to discern what the Knicks can give the Grizzlies in return. Jerry West has been holding out hope that he can swing a deal with the Magic for Mike Miller.

Really sounds like a bad deal from the Knicks perspective. If I read it correctly, the trade would give the Knicks an explosive scorer in Willlamson. If he was such an explosive scorer why would the Pistons trade him? Isn't that what they need? The Knicks don't really need Robinson (another PF), or Hubert Davis (a far worse Allan Houston clone), or Corlis (another SF/PF tweener).

I wouldnt trade spree for any of these bums. Reasons: 1) The Knicks need to make money - remember this is a business, and Spree is their most marketable player. 2) Spree is playing solid, if he keeps it up his value goes up - why take trash for him? 3) Cap room? This team isng going to be under the cap for several lifetimes, why sacrifice Spree for no reason.

The Piston's trade - we trade Spree (an All-Star) for bums - non-impact players (none of which will ever be All-Star's) that's just stupid.
Plus Spree's contract end's in two years I believe (correct me anyone if I'm wrong). The Knicks need to just wait it out with Spree. Again, it's not like we are going to get anybody worth while in return (in terms of veteran players) and probably no young talent. And I don't know why the Knicks are so interested in Dale Davis. He is not some great forward or center. I don't get it. I would be interested in Stromile Swift though. That is the only person considerabe to me. He's young, talented. If he were to play in a big market like NY, I'm sure he'd be even better.
NY KNICKS 4 EVER! Will we ever find players like Anthony Mason, Xavier McDaniels, Patrick Ewing again? I hope so.

It also seems dumb from the Pistons side.....Rip is playing his best ball right now. Why stunt his development by adding a plyer that plays the same position?

spree would play the 3... they are starting michael curry at the 3. he played 17 minutes last night, zero points i think
by the way, i like the idea of getting lorenzen and stro show for spree...
what ru talking about. Lorenzen is the man to get. He is a much better prospect he was putting up Camby type numbers 12 ans 12. He only 27 so he has a while to go. Him and McDyess should have a bright future together.

He also plays on the Grizzlies and when you play on a bad team your #'s are inflated.

I agree with that on scoring, but rebounding doesn't change as much team to team. Still, would I give up Spree for just this guy? Neeewwwwwwoooooooo.

What if the Pistons put in the Grizzlies first rounder and their own first rounder. I'd definitely do that then, 2 lotto picks and a mid-first rounder.

I hate the Pistons deal and agree that its a bunch of crap. LWright isn't great, but the deal centers on Swift... I wouldn't give a pick but would deal Spree and the exception for a young big man. Swift has a ton of upside. Him McDyess would be a tough 4/5 combo (swift has a 7'2 wingspan and can jump through the Gym). Wright wouldn't be bad for depth. Next years lineup would be Ward Houston Nailon McDyess Swift ... with Postell, Williams, Thomas, Wright, and high draft pick for depth. Not bad... if they could unload eisly or anderson that would be a dream. Memphis is the way to go. We may have to sweeten for that one to go.

The Detroit deal isn't bad from a talent standpoint, but we don't need more depth at a position we are already struggling to find minutes for Lee Nailon. That would just create more problems. I like getting involved with Memphis, but i can't see us dealing Sprewell to them. I would love to keep Sprewell and trade Ward, the exception, and picks for Knight and either Swift or Wright. That would help us out a lot.
