Nalod, and the ever so lovely Mrs. Nalod rolled down Broadway from Times Square basking in the lights of broadway. Neon and startling video screamed with excitement as I was grace the Garden faithful for the first time in 20 years.
We pulled up to the "sign" of all signs and mixed in the swells of the human sea that only a preseason game on a friday nite could muster. Mets might be playing in the rotting swamp known as Flushing Bay, but here in the high rent district was the only thing that truley matters: Isiahs debut on Broadway as witnessed by Nalod and his better half.
Out into the crowd and into the arms of "Marv"! Yes!, this witness would not be solo but the internet hath brung two souls together for this event! Dressed in his Fridays blue pinstripe super 100's, Mr. Marv was looking every bit the part of professional knick fan and ready to "man up".
As we exchanged our greetings and walked in to the ticket area we were greeted by, yes fresh from his self imposed exile the man we call "DJ"! Out of closet for the new season he returns in glory and we exchange pleasentries. Given our fondness for each others work, Mrs. Nalod is finding out that "Nalod" is a person she did not really know and the rest of the night I am explaining much of what is going on with out website and the participants.
!
Garden is like half full and not that energetic. I am just taking in the building and thinking all the concerts, hockey games (even the old World Hockey League games! Go Golden Blades!) Knick games, etc. The place felt good and was happy to see it had not changed all too much. Being an old building not much ad space flashed all over as it does in the new buildings. The sound decibles were reaonable and the organ was much more appreciated now then in the past. The false strobe lights to pump up the crowd was a bit cheesy, but better than blasting bad music as they do in Charlotte!
The game: Really not much to report. I read the thread and don't agree with much. This was the Nets third string team. Marcus looked good but we don't need anymore guards. This was Balkmans night and he looks good. He looked better than the nets Scrubs. Eddy looked like crap and was huffing and puffing. Stuff you don't see on television. Trust us, were were not happy. He doesn't do much more than Sweets and we gave up a ton for him. We gotta have faith.
Franbury: Same crap. Marbury kicked out the ball and tried not to ever take an easy shot. Tries to draw the foul withich is good, but hitting an outside shot is just as good. Francis looked like he wanted to please and not shoot. I guess Marv and I just shrugged and don't get why he is even on the team. Not if Can'tTradeBury in on the team. "Harry" had reiterated to us how Isiah is Phuched in that he tied his knick career to Marbury and he is untradeable for now. Larry could not work with Marbury and Isiah messed that up big time. No facts here mind you, just somones observation.
Dlee looked great even if his shots were not falling. Frye looked good and was smooth. We thought Balkman will be just fine to the extent Jeffries will be a waste. But its just the first game and really expectations were low.
Special Nate looked fine, and Mardy is much bigger than we thought!
Nets looked ok. Kristic was off, Jeff didn't seem that much into it, and not having Carter and Kidd was a big dissapointment to me. Hate the nets if you will, but Carter is one of those special players whom basketball fans have to just enjoy watching. He can do anything ont he court he wants, rebound, block shoots, run the point, shoot anywhere and skywalk. He holds himself back and paces himself which is not Jordan like, but pratical from many standpoints. I was looking forward to seeing him!
Ilic is a big dude but a ways from being fluid. SKita and Paul Miller looked good in the garbage time they had with the summer league team. Skita is big and very smooth. Can't judge what he did as there was no real team out there. Same with Balkman in spots. He played some point forward and looked good. But lets not get to up as it was not much competition out there!
Knick win was nice and important the team win and get used to it. This was not a big test and the Garden was not all that engergized.
On to the bar and watch the Mets lose. Im 45, Marv is a bit older and DJ I have no Idea. Acts with poise and Shaves his head, So I'd say 28-33 yrs old. Great dude and we had some great laughs! Here we are out having some drinks and just acting like a bunch of boys. Really it was quite fun talking knicks, and even more so the Ulitmate Knicks participants and different characters. We explained to now exausted but still lovely Mrs. Nalod what a "Bonn1997" is, The interplanetary stylings of "DIDO", and the rest of the crowd! Very funny to exchange our thoughts to each other and we had some good laughs.
After a few drinks and the mets looking bad Mrs. Nalod gave me the "you had your fun but I've been up since 5am getting the kids stuff together for our trip so if you even want "any" tonite lets get a cab!" look that only a wife of 20 years can flash. A part of me wanted to put her in the cab and continue into the nite with my old internet buddies but Mrs. Nalod, still being on my favorite person list has strong pull with this look so while the laughs were strong and the mood was good we said our good byes and headed to our borrowed apt.
Having had a 20 hour day and still a full weekend ahead, the theme of moderation was welcomed the next morning. Mrs. Nalod still had the look in her eye. Hey, New York City, a killer apartment, no kids, Whaddaya expect!
Being an NYC expatriot it is so much fun for us to be in the city visting with friends and family while attending concerts, knick games and doing some fine shopping!
No doubt If I were still domiciled in NYC would this not be a once a month thing to catch the games from time to time with these dudes!
Thanks to Marv and DJ for showing us a great "knick themed" nite on the town! And to "Harry" for giving us the inside scoop!
Back to work!
