man, this makes me sick... From Insider:

Speaking of awards, Ron Artest already has one vote for the All-Defensive Team. "If they don't put him first-team all-defense this year, I'll be disgusted. I'll be very disgusted," Cleveland's Darius Miles told the Indianapolis Star. "We call him 'The Beast' for a reason," Brad Miller said of Artest. "He's so strong, and he just loves playing defense. He scares people anymore. He just physically and mentally intimidates people." Artest agrees. "As much physical play as I can do without fouling I'm going to do," Artest said. "It's like football-basketball for me."

Those highlights on sportscenter made me queasy as well . Good job Crapscott (clever spin on Tapscott's name)! A prototypical Knick from the old days... the guy was a warrior at SJU.

This is why we need a new GM.

Again, to be fair, this wasn't Layden's fault. He wasn't even hired yet. I agree we need a new GM (and a new owner) but Layden's biggest mistakes are:

- Glenn Rice (3 2-guards rotate the 2-3)
- Travis Knight (nuff said)
- Luc Longley (injured and Layden knew it)
- 100 mil to Houston (please!)
- 4.5 mil exception to Spoon (I like Spoon okay, but not for that money)
- Shanderson and Eisley (to me proof Layden doesn't know what he's doing)
- 2001 draft (Chenowith and Wright)
- inability to land a real starting center
- triples up covered positions and ignores size/quality needs at other positions

Tapscott was Grunfeld's guy. I blame Checketts for allowing him to run that draft.

I forgot to mention the Donnell Harvey/Strickland deal and getting Harrington, as mentioned on the "saturday game" topic.

awh crap, did anyone see this article?

http://www.nypost.com/sports/25614.htm

Excerpt:

Artest is the NBA's fourth most accurate shooter (55.6 percent, including 61.2 percent over the last five games). Not too shabby for a 41-percent connector over his three-plus year career, whose practice habits before, during and after scheduled workouts are unrivaled, according to his coach, teammates and Donnie Walsh. According to the club president, because of the towering altitude of ferocity created by Artest and Al Harrington, the Pacers are able to rehearse for hours at a frenzied frequency.

Yes we should of drafted him but knowing the Knicks preference for
washed up vets he would be rotting on the bench.I hate to say it but
he was lucky that the Knicks passed on him or he probably wouldnt
have had the chance to show how good he is.

I´m very happy with this topic because Freddy plays (well, he is in a team) in Spain: Unicaja Malaga is a good european team with good players ( like Gurovic YUG, Okulaja GER or Louis Bullock US ). Unicaja have three centers Weis, Kornegay and Vázquez. Freddy has been this years a good defensive option, he is tall and can block some shoots but he sucks a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in the offense. He is the typical "height without weight" and without any spirit like Mase, Oak or Starky.
OVERALL: He is better than Chenowith, Spencer, Lang, Knight...so I aren´t crazy if I think he must have a chance in the team (He is better than Pat Burke who is playing in Orlando, I´ve could watch Burke in spanish league). However when he drafted him over Artest was the stupidiest option in the draft history.

Remember, NBA isn't one on one, it's a team game. Burke plays well in the team game because he hustles and has some muscle. He's not there to score. Weis is too much like Ilgauskas, physically. These 7-foot guys all want to shoot the ball, but they're too thin and get hurt easily. That's stupid. They need to get some bulk and push guys around. Still, if Weis wanted to play in the NBA, he'd be able to get a bench spot on a team right now.

The biggest joke with the Weis trade was that no one asked Weis if he wanted to play in the U.S. in the first place. If Knicks scouts had talked to the kid, instead of his 'stateside' management (not even his real agent, but an adjunct agent) they would have known he had little interest in moving to America. He should never have been entered in the draft in the first place. It was a greedy U.S. agent's fantasy that had no real chance of ever happening. Knicks didn't do their research.
