Hi all.

I am part of a group that is putting together a fantasy league based website that introduces a new slant on the normal game. I am looking for feedback on the description of the game; if you have any suggestions on how you would tweak the game or how you would want it played, please let me know. If you know of any other user who is a big fan of this type of game, please point them in this direction. I do appreciate everyone’s time and input.

Today, most Fantasy NBA games last an entire season, with participation that varies as the long season progresses. Our game is based (and played) on a night-by-night proposition. On any given night a user can join and participate in a public league game (5 players in a public league). Users can also set up private leagues and send out invitations to join.

Each night there is an NBA game being played, users pick 7 players for his/her team. You can only pick players from teams that are playing that day. There is no draft for the league; all players are available for each user’s team (this does means that it is possible for an NBA player to be on more than 1 team in a league). Users will be able to change their 7-player “lineup” until 15 minutes before the start of the first NBA game played that evening. Also, you will not be able to tell which players other users in your league have picked until after the first NBA game has started. Stats are kept for the normal 9 categories. At the end of the night, you are ranked according to accumulated stats across your lineup and a winner is declared.

We first plan to rollout a free version of the game. Shortly afterward, you will be able to participate in a pay version of the game ($5 to join, winner takes home the league pot).

What do you think? What would you change? What would you add?

Let me know.

Being an avid fantasy player, I appreciate the new idea.

Suggestions and random ideas:

-Weekly vs daily
-cummulative points like fantasy football instead of categories
-limit players picked to 6 players: PG, SG, SF, PF, C, and an actual sixth man on the bench
-add option to pick a team and use the score differential (win by 20 > win by 2)
-other stats like player efficiency rating (PER)

I like the no commitment approach that comes with no drafting. ...resembles Salary Cap Football, or my first experience with FB, fantasy GM that was provided by cnn.si... I LOVED it. Based on adds and drops, a players value would increase or decrease, and, you can sell at that price and by another player without losing money... it was great. However, if you didn't start at the beginning of the season, there's no use playing. I guess I like anything that involves a salary cap... If i think of anything else, i'll post...

thanks!
-Weekly vs daily

running week-long or month-long tournaments are in the works. Different style tournaments too: 1) everyone plays every day until the end 2) tournament lasts for 1 month, every x number of days you league has a winner and the winner moves on to the next round.

-cummulative points like fantasy football instead of categories

never seen the football side of thing and not sure I understand. could you explain further?

-limit players picked to 6 players: PG, SG, SF, PF, C, and an actual sixth man on the bench

interesting. I like.

-add option to pick a team and use the score differential (win by 20 > win by 2)

how would that work with the context of what we are doing?

-other stats like player efficiency rating (PER)

Yes. I would like to add 1 more stat category like that.

The nightly basis thing is very appealing. Really. Cause I have always wanted to setup a league for ONE BIG NIGHT and see who calls the best shots. You can count on me hosting 5 or 6 bigtime leagues on 5 or 6 different nights through the season. I'm going to have so much fun with this when it is made available to us.

Do you have a certain salary cap limit over which you cannot go when you pick players? Since Kobe gets better stats than most other SG, Lebron is the best SF and Garnett is the best PF, almost 90% of the league will pick those 3 every night. They'll do the same for PG's and go with either Chris Paul or Jason Kidd etc. I hope I'm making sense here. For example: If Kobe's rating is 12, Garnett is 14, Lebron is 14, Kidd is 10 and Duncan is 11 can you pick all of them in the same night? I think thats too easy for most people and might make some lose interest. Instead it might be a lotta fun if people are given 40 points and one picks Lebron (40 - 14 = 26) and then pick someone like Troy Murphy at PF, Crawford at SG and Livingston at PG to make a total of 40 points. Is this already in place?

Also, can you give the option to pick a coach? So if 5 games are being played, you pick a coach of 1 of the 10 teams and if he wins you get 10 points for the right pick. I've played that in the past and it was fun. Gives you the feeling of having complete control over your team like an actual general manager.

The $5 I'm assuming is a nightly bet. Will that be a buy in to a certain league and then winner takes all?

For some reason I emailed martin a few questions instead of just posting them here. Strange things happen when you wake up early on a Sunday for no reason. Martin asked me to post my email to him and his reply on this thread to avoid duplicate questions.

My email
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm a little confused about the way the nightly leagues will be setup.
You said people can host Private leagues on a nightly basis. I see a ton
of people doing a lot of creative things with this idea. In the past, I
have noticed every season has 5 or 6 really big days where seasons are
made. So will I have the ability to create 5 different leagues through
the season for just 1 night per league?

example: I'll most probably (league #1 Dec 25th) want to create a league
on a night when Denver, Chicago, Miami and New York are playing big time
games. So can I invite different people (if Denver is playing a big
game, invite some friends from Denver so they can pick Carmelo on their
team etc) just for that one league for that one night?

And (league #2 March 25th) then invite a dude from Cleveland, Portland
and LA along with some New York fans? Is that how this nightly private
league feature be setup?

MARTIN'S RESPONSE:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is what I was thinking: A league owner creates a private league and sends out invites. Every night there is a game, users in the league can compete against each other by coming back to that league and selecting their players. There is no need to set up different leagues for each night UNLESS you wanted to play against/invite a different group of users.

That clear?

I guess we may be adding an option that when you create a private league, it will auto add each night as a possible gameplay night or let you pick and choose various dates to play. For private leagues I was thinking that a league owner would have the option to "turn on" or "turn off" the gameplay for that night, or, as you have suggested, pick various nights throughout the season that you want your users to play.

if you picked the winning coach it was 5pts. A Salary Cap is a good idea but how much? is it based on the players real salary?

One idea I came up with was to group the salaries and rank them 1-10 and use it as a stat category like Turn Overs (less is better). KG, Marb, and the other $20M per guys would be a 10.... rookies would be 1. Like that.

I dont think real salaries should count towards a players fantasy rating. A reason for playing fantasy is putting a team together based on what you think their value is. But then again, being overpaid and underpaid is frequently discussed by fans so its probably a good idea.

ok, agreed, maybe salary is a bad category to keep track of. What if each player had a fantasy rank (based on their PER or stats or whatever). We could use this as the 10th category. I just want to avoid a situation where every Picks KG, Kobe, Shaq every night.... this would encourage users to pick a wider range of players.

Thoughts?

All those dudes would have really high PER's and so stil lhave high ranks. Wont stop anyone from picking them. What about a category for Personal Fouls? Aggresive defenders like KG, Shaq and Big Ben tend to have a lot of fouls, about 3 a game. For a rook that plays 20 mins, 1 foul a game is more like it. Just a suggesiton.

PER would be really interesting, especially for high energy guys that play like 10 mins a game but still score 10 points. They would end with 40 pooints PER!

you are right. We will treat it like TOs whereby the lower total PER of your team will be better for you. Kinda like a salary cap for NBA teams today.... the lower the actual salary the better.
