New York Trade Breakdown
Outgoing

Maurice Taylor
6-9 PF from Michigan
6.3 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 0.8 apg in 18.0 minutes

Steve Francis
6-3 PG from Maryland
14.4 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 4.9 apg in 34.2 minutes

Incoming

Eddie Jones
6-6 SG from Temple
11.8 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 2.4 apg in 32.5 minutes

Stromile Swift
6-9 PF from Louisiana State
8.9 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 0.4 apg in 20.4 minutes

Basically you can let Eddie Jones go to have a spot (Woods?), you can either start Swift(he is a better fit next to Curry than Frye because of his shotblockng), and let Frye come off the bench to spell the 4/5 or reverse it and use Swift off the bench. Lee can back up the 3/4 slots again using a rotation of Jefferies, him, sometimes Q.

Stromile Swift is in Memphis? When did this happen?

Rockets send Gay, Swift to Memphis for Battier

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - The Houston Rockets officially traded forwards Rudy Gay and Stromile Swift to the Memphis Grizzlies for forward Shane Battier on Wednesday.

Gay was chosen by Houston as the eighth overall pick out of Connecticut in the 2006 NBA Draft. He appeared in 64 career games for the Huskies, posting a scoring average of 13.6 points. As a sophomore, the 6-9, 220-pounder was named an All-Big East First Team selection, and an NABC All-America First Team and Associated Press All-America Second Team member.

"We acquired one of the very best prospects from this year’s draft," said Grizzlies president of basketball operations Jerry West. "Even though he is a very young player at 19, the talent of this young man is phenomenal and we are hopeful people will enjoy watching this special kind of athlete. With the addition of Rudy, Stromile, and our other draft picks, this will be a year that will create opportunities for our young players to play and our veterans to share their insight and experience."

Swift played for the Grizzlies for the first five seasons of his pro career. He averaged 8.9 points per contest last season.

Battier averaged 10.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest last season, his fifth in the NBA after being drafted out of Duke in the opening round by Memphis in 2001.

wow, I had no idea!

EDIT: Of course NY would do that trade. Would Menphis? Steve is definitely not a Fratello kinda PG.

I think w/o Gasol, they need scoring and they are not going to get any type of post scoring this cheap(except maybe Jones for Randolph-but then they have a redundancy at Forward when Gasol comes back. Can't wait to see that fight. Deebo vs Albert Einstein!)

At least with Francis they can have a pretty dynamic backcourt of Damon and Francis with Gasol in the post when he comes back.

I would never do it if I was Memphis. I think that Memphis is in a bit of a rebuilding phase, especially with Gasol down 50%+ of the year. No reason to ADD payroll for a player who doesn't really make any sense for their situation. I think Steve has to play well here OR perhaps a team like Minnesota, who has some contracts they dont like, would be willing to swap picks and contracts for Steve.

I hate underachieving all-world talent players like Stromile but I guess if we're getting rid of Francis, I'd make the trade. Under ANY other circumstance I would not make this trade.

Agreed on the Memphis part. Guys teams won't possibly have any interest in unless you're taking back worse garbage):

Jerome James
Steve Francis
Malik Rose
Maybe Marbury and Crawford too

I really doubt it. You can get a streay scoring SG who doesn't do much besides shoot for about one-fifth his salary.

i can't believe HOU would send 2 young former top 10 lottery picks for a role player like Shane Battier... Jerry West must have some hidden surveillance pics of the Rockets' owner & his 19 yo mistress to have pulled that one off.

Swift sucks, but to get rid Francis, it would be worth it. I think Swift has 3 or four years on his contract, so he would not come without a price, but if we let Jones and J. Rose walk after this season, the Knicks would finally be nearing salary cap sanity. With M. Rose leaving the following year, we would have a PF/C rotation of Curry, Frye, Lee, Swift, and James, which is not bad assuming Curry, Frye, and Lee continue to improve. Plus, getting rid of Francis and letting Rose and Jones go will open up minutes for Crawford, Nate, JJ2, Balkman, and Collins. This would be a great trade for the Knicks. I doubt Memphis will do it b/c they are afraid of the salary cap and Francis is a headache no team would lightly take on (except the Knicks). If Francis plays well at the start of the season, Memphis might conclude that he could be the missing piece to a long playoff run. I think that is the only way this trade happens.

would it really be worth it? Do we know what francis will be giving us?

I like the trade, but not for the reasons stated.

I like francis. But we have a glut at the guard and Jones is expiring.

Those are the only real reasons.

To dump franchise is absurd. We may as well just cut him.
