Before anyone goes on a rant about how there are more important things than basketball - I completely agree and thats not the issue here.

The issue is that I don't want to hear my franchise point guard who makes 20 mill a year refer to the sport as a hobby for him. I want to hear how this season is so important to him that all he's done is train when he's not revamping his image with discount sneaker campaigns. I want to hear "this game is a hobby to some guys, but to me its about the city of New York and leaving everything on the floor each night."

This quote doesn't mean anything too dramatic, but it is another dumb Marbury quote. How would any of your bosses feel if you sat in their office and said "Look, I appreciate you having me here, but this is really just a hobby for me. I've done a lot of other great things in life." Its just a dumb thing to say, at a time where he should be saying things about the upcoming season and how focused he is.

I think the article and this point are very different. I think its a bad enough comment that deserves its own.

once again i can honestly say i don't give a F what steph says or does off the court if he can rock it on the court and bring this deadass franchise back to life on the court where it counts. if he says pretty s**t and then stinks it up on the court again the words will have been forgotten pretty quickly.

I believe so many of these things he utters (like everyone who doesn't win a championship is a loser like him, or that he doesn't need to prove anything cause he's already won at the game of life) are sweet little nothings that Isiah whispers into Steph's fragile ears to keep him afloat.

But I can imagine him cringing when he then hears Marbury repeat them to the world. They're meant to be heard and internalized by Steph, not spoken.

IMO they don't even sound boastful, they sound desperate and compensatory.

Obviously Marv. I think everyone would agree that results are more important than talk. But at this point, for this season all we have to know how ready he is, is what he's saying - and so far this is not a good sign...

i'm just saying that i'm conceding that he always talks some kind of trash. i take it as meaningless, just as i would if he were talking team or readiness or dedication or some other positive cliche.

My job is different than playing a sporting game. If I were doing more than one thing in my life to include my job that was significantly helping me stay afloat; then indeed...one of the two would probably be just a hobby to me.

Take someone who's retired and just in it to have someting to do....depending on the person, you're getting a dedicated or lazy worker...but who's call is that to make?

If you were doing TWO things that brought you enough incolme to survive on either thing; would you feel misjudged if someone said you need to give your all to what THEY feel should be your primary concern?

Who's to say you're not dedicated to both?

I guess Marbury is my franchise pointguard too (since you put it that way), and I don't have a problem with the comment since he's playing a sport and getting paid to do it...(doesn't mean he's not bringing his best to it).

Critics of the game and certain players will always find something to keep fuel on the fire; but everything is not concrete as we might want it to be when we present our views on different subjects pertaining to players we like , dis-like, or are indifferent to.

People who have a hobby for a job usually do great at what they do.

Marbury's hobby is basketball. His job is destroying franchises.

Selling a line of clothing is considered "charity", and a job he's paid ~$20,000,000 per year for constitutes a "hobby."

Just another day in Bizarrobury's world.

I've stuck with Marbury for awhile and continue to give him chances.

However, that quote pretty much sums up the difference between a great player and a player who has the talent, but not the heart to be great.

Kobe wouldn't tell you that basketball is a hobby for him. He'd tell you that basketball is his life. Hell, even Allen Iverson wouldn't call basketball a hobby.

That's one of the reasons why I feel basketball has really gotten worse in the NBA. How many stars can you think of right now that deeply care about the game and commit themselves fully to becoming the best players they can be.

Our stars today like Wade, LeBron, etc, would get eaten alive by the NBA stars of the 80s or 90s. Hell, they showed it in the Olympics.

Guys like Bird, Ewing, Magic, Jordan, Barkley, Hakeem, Isiah, etc, made basketball their lives while they were playing.

Today, it seems like these young guys just want the NBA life (big house, expensive cars, and all that stuff).

Its a shame.

Everytime I hear Marbury speak nowadays, it's like having a porcupine get angry and taking it out on my ears.

I don't think he said anything so bad here. Maybe "hobby" is not the perfect word, but you guys are going crazy dissecting every word that comes out of his mouth.

Sure didn't seem like a "hobby" when he was fighting with LB over control of the team...or when he pouted when he didn't shoot....or when he yelled at teammates...or when he was passing up critical shots....

For the life of me I can't figure this guy out.

Him saying basketball is just a hobby is like a builder I hire and pay $200,000 to build my house telling me that it's just a side thing that he'll only devote his free time to.

Or maybe it's like a builder who's not a perfect speaker trying to convey the point that he cares a lot about building BUT has other things like a wife and family in his life too. If Steph were a lazy guy who came into camp 25 pounds overweight every year, I'd be concerned about this because it would make sense that he was viewing basketball only as a hobby in your use of the term. But you can tell just from looking at him that he doesn't take a day off. That's why I can't understand the obsession with this word.

Builder-I have a family, but I am still going to use your $200,00 to keep myself entertained when I feel the need. You DO NOT EVER tell people that pay you to do something that what they are paying you to do is only a hobby.

On the bright side, at least Marbury finally admitted that he isn't a professional, but then again we already knew that.

Everyone has a family.

I have a family and still wouldn't say my job is my hobby. It's my job. Using the term hobby implies that basketball is just something he does and he really doesn't care how he does it. You can dabble in a hobby. You can't dabble in a job.
