Sup Everyone...

For those interested I just put up my latest Old School Hip Hop Mix which I am labeling a "Golden Age" mix. I posted the text from my podcast site to explain what I mean (although I know pretty much everyone here knows exactly what I'm talking about) and the track listing.

From my podcast site:

http://radio.weblogs.com/0144499
"So, as promised here is the "Golden Age" Hip Hop mix I have been discussing for some time. I apologize before you listen to this podcast for a few record skips that sadly took place on a few tracks. Part of that may be related to my setup since I am currently missing a screw meant to attach the cartridge to the headshell on on turntable, making it a bit less stable.

Regardless, I hope everyone enjoys the mix as much as I had creating it. I tried to put together a blend of well known tracks of that era, plus a few gems that may have fallen below the radar. Technically, Da Youngsta's, 'Mad Props', and Lords of the Underground's, 'Neva Faded,' off of their sophomore album were released in 1994, a year after the "Golden Age" but the sound of both songs is definitive of that era. In fact, both songs were produced by two of the the most talented and influential, who also worked closely together for years, Marley Marl and K-Def. In fact, this podcast is HIGHLY influenced by and peppered with the dirty, raw sound that made Marley Marl the legend that he is in Hip-Hop."

If you think that was the golden age of Hip-Hop ... you are fooling yourself.

Half of the artists listed are bums.

LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Doug E.Fresh, Fat Boys, Whodini, UTFO, MC Lyte, Salt N Pepa, Kid N Play, Fresh Prince, Stetsasonic, JJ fad, Boogie Down Productions, Eric B & Rakim

^now that's the Golden Age

Umm...I'm not the one that labeled the era of 1987-1993 the 'Golden Age' in Hip Hop. So, I don't believe I am fooling anyone, including myself:

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=77:12014

Sure, that label may be disputed, but many would call the music from the period you are referring to (of which some qualify for both) "real" Old School Hip Hop (of which I also love).

I find it interesting how some become extremely defensive and divisive over what labels are attributed to various periods of "Old School" Hip Hop. When I labeled an earlier mix I made of hip-hop from a similar period "Old School" I had people say "That's not Old School Hip Hop!!" In fact there is an entire site dedicated to ONLY pre-1986 rap that claims it is about real old school hip hop. Would calling it New School or has calling it "Golden Age" really make/made much of a difference? Apparently not.

hey PresIke... this is off-season, so if you want a few more hits and fully expose yourself to the UK crowd, go ahead and create the thread in the main forum. Andrew and I can always move it here after you get the eyes following it.

Just FYI for next time.

Cool, Martin...I appreciate it man.

Oh yeah, bigpimpin...Eric B and Rakim (my second favorite group of all time after PE) I believe would probably qualify primarily for being part of the "Golden Age" in that their work is almost exclusively from 1986 and beyond. I mean, Rakim is, as I am sure you know, primarily responsible for creating the "modern lyricist/emcee" in rap. His flow was revolutionary and essential to post 1986 rap, while Run DMC was key to moving beyond the more playful and electro rap of the very early 1980's.

Anyway, just to let you know all of the artists you listed are amongst my favs of all time.
