NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Jay Williams' bid to resurrect his NBA career after a serious motorcycle crash three years ago has brought him to New Jersey, where he worked out for Nets officials and has been invited to training camp.

Kevin Bradbury, who represents Williams, said the Nets invited the former Duke star and No. 2 draft pick to training camp in October. Williams hasn't played in the NBA since his 2002-2003 rookie season when he averaged 9.5 points for the Chicago Bulls.

Nets general manager Ed Stefanski said Thursday that Williams had given "strong indications" that he was interested in accepting the invitation.

Williams crashed his motorcycle into a light pole in June 2003, fracturing his pelvis and tearing knee ligaments. He was hospitalized for 3 1/2 months and had nerve damage in his left leg. The Bulls bought out his contract for about $3 million.

Williams is considering the offer and no contract has been signed yet, Bradbury said. The Nets are expected to have a full roster of 15 players under contract, which means Williams would not receive any guaranteed money.

"That allows us to get a look at him, plus the whole league gets a look at him," Stefanski said. "I haven't met a much nicer kid than Jay. He has unbelievable desire. If anybody has the drive to make it back into the league, he does."

Bradbury said Williams has held workouts for several teams over the last two months, including Phoenix, Seattle, Philadelphia and the Los Angeles Lakers. He also participated in Steve Nash's annual charity game in Vancouver last month.

"He used to be one of the explosive guys you'd ever seen, and he's not that type of player any more," Bradbury said. "He's not going to rise up on you like he used to. But he still has good foot speed and lateral movement, and he can still get by a guy in either direction.

"He's working really hard on extending the range of his jump shot because he knows he has to have those things to compete at this level again."

Williams, from Plainfield, N.J., led Duke to the national title as a sophomore. He was a two-time All-American and the 2002 AP college player of the year.

I guess Marcus Williams is that good that there is room for a third point guard.

I was waiting for someone to bring that up.

I hope Jay Williams can get back on the court. I am interested to see firsthand what he can do now.

I think this is more of the fact that the Nets hope that Jay pans out and they then have a viable trading piece.

They will invite a lot of guys to camp. All or almost all will be cut. This is only newsworthy because of his name and prior skills. If he makes the squad the Nets will carry 3 PG's just like every team in the NBA. Not sure what this move has to do with anything other than the possibility that jason can return to form and the Nets willing to give him a shot. Considering he played ball in Metuchen growing up it's not to much of a stretch. Eluding to this being unhappiness with Marcus is typical empty nonsense. Marcus is scheduled to be their backup PG. The nets are trying to be a division winner. If they are unhappy with Marcus they aren't going after an unknown commodity they are going after someoen they know can help them. You guys and your speculation.

Bip, you should know by now that common-sense never prevails here.

If Marcus becomes a player and JaWill can be a viable backup, they can trade Kidd.

And what will vince do next summer???

Well, I guess Balkman is so good the Knicks invited another swing man named Donnie McGrath to compete in summer league. Oh, and Frye and Lee must be so good the invited Kenny Adeleke.

Come on that is crazy. If he works out great for them. If he doesn't, no real loss.

My comment regarding Marcus was intended as a joke (hence the smiley face) and I assume Franco12 intended the same thing. I have no doubt that, if the Nets were concerned about Marcus, they would get someone more established than Jay Williams to be a backup PG. Hopefully, Jay can make it back into the NBA.

Right now the Nets have to explore all there options because carter is looking to go elsewhere and if thats the case why not look into trading kidd for some young talent and move him to a contender......

They have a few nice pieces with Williams, Jefferson, and Krstic if they move kidd for some young talent and they get something for vince they have some money to play with and will be under the cap, it makes sense to explore low cost high reward options....

THe nets are a lame duck franchise that must juggle keeping up the game and yet still prepare to make a splash when they move to Brooklyn.

Kidd could be the final piece for a team like Chicago or the Nuggets if they wanted to package some youth.

The nets are an interesting team to follow regarding its business model and keeping costs resonable. When Kidd and Vince get going they are fun to watch also.

See Dolan? This is what happens when you let your "product" falter. Your fan base is suseptable to looking at alternatives!

I say "product" because I have heard Charles Dolan refer to the knicks as a product. Fans are passionate and care, but MSG is pushing a product that we are the buyers for. When you put it that way, it kinda dilutes the passion don't it?

Im sure the diehard homers won't see it, but its businsess man, just business.

Joe, you are comparing the #2 pick from 3 years ago to a bunch of nobodies. (I know you wree kidding, but seriously though.)

Anyone who thinks that if Jay Williams can play for reall again, he is not a threat to take M William's spot or cut into his time quite a bit, is fooling themself. The real question is whether or not J Williams is able to play. If he is M Williams better be good!

Nalod: The Nets are not trading Kidd.

If the Williams show just half their potential this year, I think the Nets have to think about trading Kidd for picks and expiring contracts.

Noone questioned his potential ability. Of course IF he regains his form Marcus would have to be good in order to maintain his spot. No kidding. But what does that have to do with anything we were talking about. And why do you miss the point of so many posts?

Read the last line of the post if you need clarification of what JoeC was saying.

The point was that it was implied that because JWill was brought into camp it must mean the Nets are unhappy with Marcus. Maybe as an attempt to ease any pain attached to the Balkman draft pick. I don't know. But regardless I thought it was ridiculous for Franco to bring this up(if he wasnt' joking). It has no merit. JWill is a jersey guy that had amazing potential. If it returns the nets may have a great signing and two guys capable of starting once Kidd leaves. If not there is no loss, they gave him a try. See in well run organizations you don't bring in guys because you hate someone else on the roster and want them gone. You bring in guys because you are trying to create a situation that enhances the team and leads to winning. Only in NY do we make moves that are solely meant to antagonize someone else associated with the organization.

Lots of guys are bought into camp to run the contract guys and make sure there are enough bodies if injury hits.

If he does real well he might land a gig with another team.

All teams bring in retreads who usually come in great shape and real hungry to establish there game and it poses a challange to the Vets who think they can just stroll in. Im sure vince and Jason have nothing to worry about other than being shown up if out of shape!

Its a nice jesture for the nets to offer and in the event he is not getting huge love it serves a dual purpose to bring him in.

Give the kid a chance is no big deal.

I was half kidding with my post- but my thought is- the nets are thin up front- and what is jay williams thinking with Kidd and Marcus? Wouldn't he be able to get an offer to come to camp with some team that might be more desperate for a pg?

I think it's more the home town thing. He's from NJ so that was an opportunity for him to get in a camp and see how he matches up against NBA competition. It doesn't matter where he goes to camp. If he is doing well he is going to get a tryout somewhere and he is going to get signed.
