SENDAI, Japan (AP) -- Defending champion Serbia and Montenegro lost its opener at the world championships Saturday with an 82-75 defeat to Nigeria, which got 18 points from Ime Udoka and a key 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter by Josh Akognon.

Serbia and Montenegro won the 2002 world title at Indianapolis while competing as Yugoslavia. However, it made this tournament only as a wild card. Now it is an aging team and some of its NBA players -- Nenad Krstic of New Jersey and Aleksandar Pavlovic of Cleveland -- are not playing.

Igor Rakocevic, who played a year with the Minnesota Timberwolves, led Serbia and Montenegro with 20 points, his team's only double-digit scorer.

Akognon gave Nigeria a 74-66 lead with three minutes left. Serbia and Montenegro pulled within four in the final minute, but free throws by Gabe Muoneke and Ebi Ere ensured the win.

New York Knicks guard Ime Udoka grabbed 18 points as Nigeria's tenacious defence and open-court speed brought a deserved 82-75 win over Serbia & Montenegro in Group A.

Udoka, who played for the New York Knicks last season, hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the third period to put Nigeria ahead 59-56. Nigeria led 25-19 at the half.

"We knew we were the quicker team," Udoka said. "They were bigger but we got the job done."

Nice. The guy is a good player. Hope he can display it more in the NBA.

yeah, I didn't even know he could score...maybe he's better than we thought. and he already is known for his defense. He could be QWoods replacement on the roster. flb strikes again.

I'd take this with a grain of salt. It's international ball with a different set of rules. Anthony Parker dominated over there. Most NBA players that can't perform here do pretty well overseas in their game.

Def. no reason to hype anything. For one, the Serbian Team playing at the WC in Japan is very different from the one that won the Tounrament in Indianapolis 4 years ago. Its younger, less experienced and generally not equally talented!
Secondly, the game is just different from the basketball played in the NBA. Teams play a lot more Zone D, even thought this is changing slowly (in the NBA), it is a lot less based on athletic skills and a lot more on teamplay and well even some basic rules are different (traveling, 3point line etc.).

I am allways sceptic when it comes to the comparisson of NBA and international Basketball. Not because of the quality level (there are some really skilled players not playing in the NBA) but the basic differences of the game itself!!!

So talking about Udoka - he has not shown those flashes on NBA level and for the Knicks thats the most important fact!!!

After this game, I heard Isiah is considering signing Udoka to next year's full MLE. I mean, hey... he's young.

On the plus side, nice to see our 16th man doing well. :)

Can't see how, unless we're waiving someone.
