The Department of Homeland Security released a bulletin this morning in response to a terrorist threat uncovered in Britain against flights between the United States and the United Kingdom. All of the major airports in The United Kingdom and The United States are in a state of high alert.
Authorities in The UK and The US believe that the terrorists' aim was to smuggle explosives aboard airplanes in hand luggage and to detonate these in flight.
Many flights on both sides of the Atlantic have been canceled and long delays are expected today and in the days ahead.
Security has been elevated at the all airports, so long delays can be expected at security.
The situation is changing rapidly but as of now the authorities are confiscating liquid and gel items found in luggage.
Security measures that are being enforced are as follows ?
* Passengers will only be allowed to board flights in possession of wallets and small purses, identity cards and travel documents, keys, glasses (but not glass cases). * Prescription medication will only be allowed on board if the name on the bottle matches the ticket holder?s, and provided it is not in liquid form. * Passengers traveling with infants will be permitted to carry formula provided they taste it in full view of airport security personnel before boarding. * All other personal possessions must be checked or discarded. No liquids of any kind will be allowed. * Travelers en route to the U.S. face intensive secondary searches at boarding gates. Attached is a copy of the security bulletin.
