Hey martin and andrew, besides JJ it's been a slow summer for the Knicks so can you keep this up for a day before moving it to OT so that it gets more exposure?

So.. I'm a 20yo college student and I'm going to Mexico with my brother(25). I haven't traveled w/o my family ever and this will be the first time I will be able to actually EXPERIENCE a vacation -- that is, not limit myself to daytime activities such as watching my dad read every single word in the museums and other tourist attractions (traps)and going to bed early so the reading can be continued the next day.

This time, I'm not looking for that. I'm not looking to getting a tan/getting babes. I'm looking forward to experiencing the culture, the people, and REAL mexico whether its through nightlife or visiting non-touristy towns, etc. I know it sounds naive but it's my first trip that I can actually enjoy (w/o limits of parents) so I'm pretty excited.

Anyone have any advice about traveling or about Mexico? Thanks.

Smuggle in like 20 of those 36 packs of bottled water. "Imported water; $10 each."

Haha, I don't.. I just don't want it to be a spring break vacation cause I can go to the beach anywhere.. Dont get me wrong, i'll go to the beach but sleeping in a 5 star hotel and just going to beaches for a week or 2 isn't exactly my ideal vacation. I like the immerse-yourself-in-the-country vacation idea. If that involves mingling on the beach, I'm all for it.

However, usually the beach doesn't imply finding out about the culture and only worrying about the perfect tan. If I want that I would go to FL or something.

I don't know anyone who has went to Mexico to try and taste the culture. Most people goto Mexico becuase they want to get wasted in Acapulco and get with other spring break sluts, which is the way it should be.

mexico has a ton of culture its just that your idea of mexico is the Sunet Motel on RT.46
Its comments like that makes me look stupid when I visit family in Brasil and have to defend America from stereotypes perceived around the world lol

Dude, I will be harassing you soon. I have a short list of places I want to visit before I get too old to really enjoy it. Brazil is on my list. I want to spend a week there and get a whole lot of culture while I'm there! I'm pushing for next year.

Marv: oh, thats "Wilding"!

Metra: where in Mexico will you be going?

My experience is Cancun area and Yes, Tulum and Xecaet(SPELLING!) which is a great place to chill for the day floating down lazy river in old old caves and other cool stuff. Great beach!

There is culture and you'll find it. Becareful as not to try to party with the locals. In a group it might not bode well as they cater to the tourist trade and want to get away from them.

In two trips I found the local people to be very nice. But like all tourist areas, there are people who migrate from around the world to take advantage of tourists.

Drunk americans flush with cash can be obnoxious and deserving at times of having that cash extracted from them.

And yes, I did get sick once. Drink Tequilla, it helps kill living things in your stomach!

The best place for local flavor in my opinion, is Oaxaca. Amazing food, crafts, and people.

Also, tulum is great like people have said as is Chichen itza (climbing that pyramid can be scaaary))

For real, modern culture in the yucatan, go to Merida. I had some great meals and experiences there. There's lots of zocolos and street fairs and such... as well as a nice ex pat community.

Ahhh fun times.....

metra, when you become a 35yo divorcee, getting a tan/getting babes will be tops on your list on every vacation.
