I posted this elsewhere... these are three year extensions that take effect AFTER this year. That means that they each have 4 years remaining under contract. That is, they are free agents prior to the 2010-2011 season. The only valid contract left on the roster is Crawford's at $10 mill. So, Big Snacks and everyone else can play out the remainder of their contract. It does mean we would be IDIOTS to take on Kmart's contract, who will be paid $16mill that year. Also, the CBA expires that summer. So, it is possible that the salary cap will be renegotiated.
Either way, the smart plan is to minimize contracts that extend that far except for characters that would complement 2 out of 3 of Lebron, Wade, Bosh.
Frye, Lee and Nate are restricted free agents the year prior and full free agents that year also. Nike being a huge supporter of big market teams would be very useful in signing some of these guys.
My point is: don't add salary past 2009. Tanking the seasons makes no sense since Chicago will swap us out next year and we still owe Utah at some point. The just need to be ready to make a serious play in 2010. Also note that this years crop of rookies should be restricted free agents that year. So, Briggs, if you really want Marcus Williams, you can make a run at him then...
