Since everyone has been arguing about the potential of various Rookies and draft picks, (did somebody say Marcus Williams, Balkman, Bynum) I figured this would be a good topic (Hey, its a looooong off-season)

There's been a handfull of guys I thought would be much better NBA players than they turned out to be.....but the one player that really stands out to me is Billy Owens. I was a big fan of his when he was at the 'Cuse. I just knew he would be a tremendous player in the NBA.

He could do it all. He was 6'9, could play 4 positions, could handle it like a point guard, pass, was a heck of a rebounder, could break his man down off the dribble.....The only thing he wasn't effecient at was perimeter shooting.

The two thinbgs that killed him was he never developed a jumper and never found a position.

I also thought Kenny Anderson would be much better. He wasn't bad, but never lived up to being the number 2 pick.

Those are very good picks. But I have Harold Miner, he came out of college as the next Jordan calling him baby Jordan and then he pretty much slipped out of the NBA unnoticed asides from his dunk contest win. Speaking of dunk contest wins our boy Kenny Walker never really panned out. came out of Kentucky averaging around 24 a game. No handle and no perimeter skills devloped had bust written all over him.

Tim Thomas was pegged as special. If people remember it was a big deal when he left after his freshman year. He was sort of peg as a 5 tool type of player like KG. Ron Mercer never lived up to the hype. Juwan Howard had 2 -3 good years. I still remember the Knicks trying to free up cap space to try and sign him to that $100 million contract (yes Isiah wasn't the only Knick GM to have trouble gauging FA), the duo of Kenny Anderson and Derrick Coleman, those guys were talked about being the next Stockton and Malone. Jimmy Jackson sat out the league his rookie year because he didn't want to play for Dallas and thought his contract offer was horrible, never materialize to be the player everyone thought he could be and what he value himself as. Sticking with the 92 draft, oh man Laphonso Ellis and Walt Williams, enough said.

Billy Owens, man that sucked for Golden State

Those golden state teams were weird. They had tons of talent buy couldn't win.

Billy Owens could have been mashburn or Antoine walker. Dude had it but just didn't cut it. The NBA is cut throat too you know. The guy was in Miami and whenever I was him play there the guy was still good. Then he is out the league. Some guys hang around for years and get money they don't deserve.

I just knew Kenny satterfield was gonna be like Kenny anderson in his prime. That dude is washed up playing street ball now.

Shammond Williams had the shooting touch, handle, passing and jumping ability of a baron davis. Or a taller Nate. That dude is lucky he got a chance to shine in Europe. He is on one of the best team in Europe right now as the starting point.

I thought frank Williams was gonna st least stick somewhere in the league by now. That deer in the head lights look he had for two years was something I never saw in a basketball player. Especially a guy that is called a playground legend in his home city.

There are some pivots I used to swear to buy ill try to remember them and post it.

Good thread by the way.

God shamgod is another point guard that comes to mind. His handle was awesome. I have seen that for myself up close. When I was coming up there was this move he did that people dubbed "the shamgod". Its the same move that this old guy in Europe gets praised for. Kids in Brooklyn was calling it the shamgod way before the euro obsession.

Anyway shamgod played for providence and then the wizards I think. I can't google it right now. He had a swingman with him st providence that was nice. Geez I wish I was st my comp.

Yo! What about the razorbacks? Corlis was ok for a few years then fell off, buy what about the "next scottie pippen" from those old razorback teams?

Any two words....ed o'bannon. Wtf happened?

harold minor
kendall gill
tom gugliotta
billy owens
tim thomas
joe smith
kwame brown

& of course, what Knick fan wouldn't say Freddy Weiss... why, we all thought he'd be the next Shaq.
After 7 years & 40K+ posts, banned by martin for calling Nalod a 'moron'. Awesome.

The swing player your thinking of is Jamel Thomas. I believe he's Telfairs half brother. I played in the same tournament as Shamgod in 92, but never played against his team (Gauchos)

How could I forget Pearl Washington, Walter Berry and Chris Jackson...Those were good ones.

Heres a few more

Hersey Hawkins
Johnny Dawkins (I loved this guy in college)
Danny Manning
Sherman Douglas
Kenny Battle
Sean Higgins (highly skilled player)
Terry Mills
Terry Dehere
Stacey King
JR Reid
Sean Eliott (was supposed top be more than a role player)
Courtney Alexander

Oh baby! This dude was hyped like lebron! I always said he wasn't that good when I was in high school. We used to almost come to blows over this guy. Dude was never on an elite level.

A guy I used to back was Charles Jones. The dude from soul in the hole that led the NCAA in scoring a couple times, playing for Liu. I just knew he was gonna blow up. i saw him play live too. He was like Jordan. Dude couldn't even get drafted I think.
