Look, I like this kid Balkman. I like his energy. I like the fact that they think he could eventually be a good, serviceable combo-defender. I like Mardy Collins. Seen him play a few times for Temple. He's smooth. Eventually, whether it's this year or down the road, we'll see what he can do. Honestly though, if they don't wind up trading Francis, then there is absolutely no room on this team for Mardy for the foreseeable future. Bottom line, you don't take Collins at 29 when Marcus Williams was on the board at 20. If you wanted a PG, Isiah, then you should've taken Williams at 20. I don't want to hear about Marcus being slightly outta shape, with the slightly elevated body fat # and all of that crap. So what? What's the summer league and pre-season for? And I don't want to hear about character issues with Williams either. Not when we all rooted for guys like Anthony Mason, Latrell Sprewell and Qyntel Woods. I'm not crazy about some of the choices these guys have made but, Goddamnit, it's time to win. Gimmie guys who can play. Period. Plus, everyone does deserve second chances. I do believe that.
You guys all should lay off Briggs btw - the guy calls it like it is and he's 100% right. Balkman's an end-of-2nd-round-type-talent, end of story. Having said that, I'll root like nobody's business for the guy because he's one of us now and I do love what he brings to the table but Zeke absolutely DID NOT PLAY HIS CARDS RIGHT ON THIS. You got your eye on this guy, fine. No problem. First off, nobody knew that. The Knicks did do a good job of keeping their interest in Balkman a secret. Mostly likely they probably didn't even mention it to Balkman himself after they worked him out. I don't want to hear Phoenix wanted him at 21. That's utter nonsense. Smokescreen. Taking the heat of themselves for making one of the wackiest picks in draft history. We could've got him at 29 for sure, traded way down into the second round to get this guy by himself or multiple 2nd rounders for #20 or, the best/most likely scenario, just invited him to summer ball because he probably would've went undrafted. Look, I'm not the biggest Marcus Williams fan, but pound for pound, he probably was the best PG in the draft after Randy Foye. Just like Collins, not really any room on the roster for Williams here, but you take him and eventually flip him in a deal with say a Steve Francis by telling a team, look, take Francis, a great talent, and if he doesn't pan out, you got your future PG in Marcus Williams. Teams needing a real PG, but skeptical on Francis alone, would've jumped at that deal. I mean, I thought Zeke liked "compiling assets." Well, when Williams slipped, he had bigtime "asset" written all over him to me. You put him in a deal with Francis, Q-Rich or JJ and now you got a shot at unloading one of these guys. Good luck trying to get rid of these guys on there own....
My guy at 29 was Justin Williams - and I know he was kinda a reach too considering he went undrafted - but definitely not as big a reach as taking Balkman at 20. I thought Zeke wanted a bigtime shotblocker - he always talked about that being a big need for us, did he not? I agree with him but wasn't willing to make the deal for over-the-hill Theo Ratliff and overrated Darius Miles (glad they didn't do that, I would've been so pissed with a move like that). I can't believe this kid went undrafted after he ripped up the pre-draft camp in Orlando and averaged 11 & 11 with a whopping 5.5 blocks/game during the season. Like Balkman, this kid is all about defense but unlike Renaldo he actually put up #s to support what he can do. If he was on board with us, there would be no Jackie Butler talk at all right now. Justin Williams would be that last bigman and a tremendous addition to Curry, Fyre and Lee. That's a tremendous frontcourt at the 4/5 spots with all 4 guys bringing different skills to the table that complement each other. The only thing about him is that he looks a little thin right now, clocking in at only around 215 pounds. But Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress calls it a "correctable weakness," as he goes on to say that, "his frame shows a lot of promise to continue to put weight on as he make the transition from the college campus to an NBA weight room, particularly his broad shoulders." Here's the link for the whole write-up: http://draftexpress.com/viewprofile.php?p=346#.
So with this kid on board, Jackie walks and we concentrate on bringing Qyntel Woods back with the LL exception or part of the mid-level (which they should now do anyway). Well, tune in tonight at 11pm when we play Sacramento in the SL to see exactly what we missed out on with Justin Williams. I'll be watching no doubt about it. I wish we could just rewind the clock to draft night to do this whole thing all over again. I'm not one to cry over spilled milk, and I'll root for Balkman & Collins all the way, but things could've been very different for us.
