A good article in todays Newsday.

Seems like it is not Checkettes, Ernie G, or Layden's fault for the very poor direction the team has been pointed in.

yeah, I have always believed that a majority of the mistakes were at least heavily influenced by Dolan. Too bad for the Knicks.

Well, Layden still made some bad deals, but I agree that Dolan is problemo numero uno. From the article:

"Smith said he wasn't allowed to rebuild with younger players and that Dolan ordered him to spend millions to create a contender."

That should convince all the people blaming Layden for the McDyess trade that they would be better off screaming "FIRE DOLAN!"

I think that Dolan has contributed to the Knicks woes. But that certainly doesnt wash Laydens hands of it.

And I dont think that Dolan can be "fired." He owns Cablevision.

Maybe a consensus of stockholders could somehow oust him out of the position?

The only answer is not paying for tickets. I gave mine up and I know many who followed. It was improbable that they would lose a high number of s ticket holders with their waiting list but the real fun starts next year. while it appears that dolan has his hands in the pot how can anyone not believe that laydumb is not responsible for 95% of the moves? heck he wanted to trade for mutumbo and dolan nixed it--that was actual smart on dolans part--watch somehow someway we wil end up with a shawn bradley and another stiff during the year.

Sure he can, by the Cablevision board of directors. Everyone has a boss.

And, yes, you're right. Layden deserves a lot of blame. Layden almost makes Pitino look like a good GM (after all, Pitino took Paul Pierce when other GM's let him drop, so he wasn't 100 per cent crap at GM.)

But, even if the Knicks had a damn good GM, and that GM decided a rebuild or a gutting of the team was in order, Dolan would never ever sign off on it. I'd agree with the 95 per cent figure if I thought Layden had even 70 per cent control of the decisions. I really believe Layden is Dolan's puppet. Layden's deals, all of them, are subject to Dolan's approval. Riley left town because Checketts wouldn't hand over more control of the team to him. Dolan removed Checketts thinking he could do better. A talented, well-respected GM would have his hands tied in NYC as long as Dolan is in control.

Briggs is right that the Mutumbo deal would have been a bad deal. But if Dolan signs off on a Shawn Bradley deal, then its Dolan's fault as much as Layden's.

The Chaney extension is a another feeble attempt by Dolan to keep the players from revolting. Dolan's only goal is to get the Knick into the playoffs THIS YEAR. Believe it.

Dolan is probably the reason that Gundy left his post. I've heard - and now it makes sense - that they bumped heads frequently. I'm sure Jeff wanted more of a voice in what players came and went. He probably also noticed the admission to meritocracy, complacency or the "just getting by attitude" of the Dolan & management. Not really thinking about the future, but always trying to make a quick fix. It doesn't work. Which is why we have - and have had - a team full of older, underachieving, overpaid players. I'm sure Gundy realized that the situation would not improve with people like Dolan and Layden in the driver seats. I don't blame him for leaving. With people like them in charge, will we ever have a chance of building a championship team?
NY KNICKS 4 EVER! Will we ever find players like Anthony Mason, Xavier McDaniels, Patrick Ewing again? I hope so.

Van Gundy was the reason for most of the old, underachieving players to be here. A few years ago he rejected a trade with Toronto that would have us draft Andre Miller. He never played rookies, he held on to guys like LJ until the very end. At least Cheney will be willing to give younger talent a chance.
