They have one of the most poorly constructed pitching staffs a team with that payroll could possible assemble. I'm not optimistic unless they make a great trade or two. Thoughts?

The Yankees scare us every year and then have a hot month and clean up all doubt. I tell you though......they are scaring the hell out of me right now!

Take Matsui, Sheff, and Cano off any other team and they're 15 games out.

and their payroll would be around $10 mil. None of those injuries have any bearing on how poorly constructed the pitching is too.

they have to get a top notch pitcher. once they get that and sheff and cano get back, they might be able to battle the red sox. but they have to win that division because i think the wild card will come from another division.

It's not about top notch pitching. Every year, the Yankees rely on pitchers who are completely breaking down. THey got lucky last year with Wang, Small and CHacun, but 2 of those guys sucked this year, and 1 of them is a 3 or 4 pitcher, so far. What they have THIS year wont cut it. They might have to rely on their minor league system again, b/c good teams just dont' give up good young pitchers.

Depends on how you looks at things.

A so-so pitching staff can be somewhat masked by having an over-powering offense. Now you put added pressure on already suspect group. We've gotten next to no production out of Sheff and Matsui, who drove in almost 250 runs last year.

We know how leading in a game effects a pitchers demeanor, not too mention having a reliable defense in the field behind him. I'm just saying the margin for error is much less, which has to screw with these guys mentally.

I hope so.
We could be the Dallas Mavs of the East.

The yankees have the 3rd best era in the AL. They are less the a .04 runs per game away from having the 2nd best Era. The only team that has a significantly better era is Detriot.

Would I like their staff to be better - you bet. But outside of Detriot they're pitching is holding up as well as the other contenders.

They're winning percentage last year .586. So far this year .582. They have to pick it up a little but things aren't desperate.
