Suns Wanted To Draft Balkman
29th June, 2006 - 1:33 am
Newsday - Many experts believed the Knicks reached badly by selecting Renaldo Balkman, but the Suns were reportedly set to pick the forward from South Carolina. The Suns ended up trading out of the first round altogether.

"I thought, 'If we take Balkman at No. 20, somebody will drop to us [at No. 29],' " Thomas said last night. "If we didn't get Collins, we had a backup. But Balkman wouldn't have been there at No. 29."

"Balkman is a unique player," Thomas said. "He reminds me of Dennis Rodman and Ron Artest. Mardy Collins is a big guard who can defend. Defensively, we feel you can put those two guys on the floor at and cover [small forward and shooting guard]." [READ]

He looks like the kind of player that would fit their system- somebody with great passing, body control who on first look doesn't have any offensive game, but in their system is suddenly averaging 12 pts a game....

Yup. The Suns thrive on activity and that's what Balkman is about. It's how Boris Diaw can go from a a guy who appears to be a bust with no discernible offensive talent to the next budding NBA star.

I have never seen the guy play, but what has been written about him seems to fit with the notion that Phoenix would have drafted him.

That Phoenix would have taken him, to me, gives justification to us taking him.

If the Suns really were set to take them, I would feel a little bit better (not too much though).

However, I don't buy any of that. Some very good players were still there for the Suns to pick. Rondo, Sergio, etc, would have all been good picks for them so Nash could get some rest and with them having to resign Barbosa soon. I doubt it was Balkman or bust for them. They needed financial help and they got it.

as opposed to who saying he would have been there? Jay Bilas? it all depends on who you want to believe, though in this case it's hard to make a case for why anyone should believe Isiah judging from his past track record... let's give Balkman a chance before we bash the pick i say

Face it we took pick 50 at 20 he will be able to do some things in the SL with his helter skelter style but at 6-6 205 that ISNT working in the NBA. Id like to see him guard q rich in the post hed push him right under the hoop

Q Rich would push anyone on this roster under the hoop, including Eddy Curry.

I'm not bashing Balkman, personally. Maybe he can help this group of misfits, fine. However, this is a classic NY Knicks move, ignoring the bigger picture, which is that you don't spend over $40 MM and come out with a role player when there's a stud still available. Based on past track record, Isiah's a hard headed guy and he wanted to prove he's smarter than everyone else and took a suprise pick.

So far all of Isiah's plans have gone to ****, because he has a history of letting his ego take over, making one move too many, giving up too much in trades if he likes the player. This is no exception.

Oh well, in one year he'll be gone. In 7 years we'll be a playoff team again. Can't wait.

he's not the only GM to pass on Marcus, so maybe they know something about him that we don't? maybe he's not the motivated type of player this team is looking for? he came into workouts way out of shape & he got into some off the court issues stealing laptops... that's gotta raise some big red flags about the guy... i'm not saying he's gonna be a bust, but i can understand why some GM's were reluctant to take the guy.

funny, we have him listed at 6'8

"The 6-8 Balkman, selected 20th, is a long-armed, run-first super-athlete, dynamite on the open floor and dynamic on defense. The highflying small forward already loves Madison Square Garden, having won the 2006 NIT MVP Award in the Mecca with the University of South Carolina. "

Isiah spins it good.

First Compare to Rodman (oldschool Piston) and Artest (a fan favorite).

Then mix it together with the envy team (Suns) you get a strong endorsment statement which looks good!

Isiah can sell it good!

WE got a lot of guards with Collins-Marb-Stevie-Craw and Nate. Somtings gotta give.

you are quoting some 11 year old on realgm, on what D'antoni said before the draft and you want to say he said it bluntly. This is totally hilarious.

I have never, ever, ever, ever heard a GM quantify a draft by saying-"Well, the team behind us was going to pick him if we didn't"...well I did hear it once and only once....last year....by Isiah Thomas........

We should have known Isiah wasn't going to take marcus williams, he loves marbury. plus he has one year to prove himself, so he drafted for needs rather than the future (since he probably won't be around in the future anyway).
