Good question. He's one hell of a shooter, really surprised he wasnt taken by someone in the second round.

Exactly, so then team's realized he's a poor man's Brad Lohaus. He could still stick somewhere because he can shoot.

I think he will make it into the league. Who knows? Maybe he will practice and become a poor man's Brad Miller.

Channing Frye is not a good comparison.

I will start: Maybe he can be a poor man's Sam Perkins.

I can't believe Taj Gray went undrafted. Weird draft. But I guess we knew that going in.

nba draft steps backwards:

now that high schoolers are not draft ready we can fill the void with our international counterparts because the people that are getting a college education while sharpening their bball skills may not stand a chance. year in and year out we chide our freshman that leave early, that should've stayed in college to get the experience of a lifetime just so we can sell them down the east river [or any usa murky river] when they decide to finish school only to end up like pittsnogle and gansey.

what a shallow event this draft turned out to be

West Virginia once again shut out in NBA Draft
Dallas Mavericks among teams interested in signing Mike Gansey as free agent

Andrew J. Beckner
Sportswriter

Thursday June 29, 2006
Mike Gansey has always been an optimistic guy.

Still, it was hard for the former West Virginia University forward to hide the disappointment in his voice. It was there, coming through loud and clear late Wednesday night.

It had been less than an hour after the NBA Draft had ended without Gansey hearing his name called.

Disappointed? Almost certainly.

"Yeah, I thought at least I'd get drafted in the second round," Gansey said.

Indeed, most pre-draft predictions named him as a borderline first-round prospect, and ESPN analyst Jay Bilas during that network's NBA Draft coverage mentioned Gansey -- projected as an NBA shooting guard -- as the best player not selected.

He wasn't alone. Fellow WVU graduate Kevin Pittsnogle wasn't selected, either. For the ninth consecutive year, no NBA team selected a former WVU player. Gordon Malone was the last, in 1997.

Yes, his night could have been so much better, Gansey admitted. And perhaps it will.

That's because despite not being among the 60 players selected in the draft, Gansey's silver lining is in knowing he'll likely catch on as a free agent before NBA Summer League play opens next week.

It could be sooner rather than later. Among the phone calls he fielded following the draft came from Dallas Mavericks' owner Mark Cuban.

"He told me he was real high on me and that all his coaches and scouts think I fit in with them," Gansey said. "We'll see what they have to offer."

And there's the glass-is-half-full view. In fact, Gansey, who watched the draft with family in their Cleveland-area home, said that after his name wasn't called in the first round, he saw the advantage of free agency.

After all, only first round players get guaranteed rookie contracts in the NBA.

So, instead of being picked and not having any choice about where he goes -- and without guaranteed money, to boot -- Gansey can be picky himself. His agent took calls from 10 team officials inquiring about signing him in the moments after the draft ended.

"Yeah, it could have been better," Gansey said, "but this way I can pick what team I want to go to."

Pittsnogle's agent, Dan Tobin, didn't return phone calls seeking comment from his client late Wednesday and early this morning. The 6-foot-11 former Martinsburg High star is expected to catch on as a free agent.

Today, Gansey plans to meet with his representatives to figure out what his next move could be. He seemed intrigued by the chance to join Dallas, the Western Conference champion that was two wins from a world title. The Mavericks lost the NBA Finals games to the Miami Heat in six games.

"I know summer league starts up in about a week, so I'll meet with (my agent) and we'll figure out which team wants me," Gansey said.

If it ends up being Dallas, he said it could be a great fit -- and not just the obvious chance at playing on a championship-caliber team as a rookie.

"It's like Mark (Cuban) was telling me, they have five guys who weren't drafted but ended up playing for them (this season)," Gansey said.

Time will tell if Gansey joins that group in the year ahead.
