I just came across this page http://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/ and was having fun looking at the ABA teams and the rosters. My first recollection of seeing a game was a NEts game in the old Isiand Garden (Elmont) when Rick Barry was a NET. I was perhaps 8 or 9. Lou Carnasecca was the coach and I recall he could yell up some foul language! A year or two before I started seeing games the Oakland Oaks with Rick Barry made a nice run and won the 2nd ABA championship. Larry Brown was the Starting point with 15.5 PPG and 9 assists average that year. He really has one at every level at some form or another. 1964 gold in Olympics 1969 ABA NCAA with Kansas NBA with Detroit Can't think of anyone with that Cred. |

Posted by BigSm00th: Read when it first came out. And I have a tape of the HBO documentary of the ABA that came out a few years back! Thanks for the heads up. http://remembertheaba.com is very cool! The early 1970s's were very cool to be a hoop fan in NY! There was an NBA-ABA allstar game once and they did a dunk contest. Dr. J might have been the first to do the dunk from the three throw line in a competition. Ever wonder why there is a circle above the free throw line? Cuz Wilt could not shot Free throws but there was no rule then about running and so long as you did not cross the line you could dunk it from there! Wilt put it there! Look at old pictures, there was not "top of the key"! |
