This summer, Smith has participated in workouts in Houston with John Lucas, a former NBA player and coach. Smith is working out with other NBA players such as Steve Francis and Mike James. And according to Smith's father, Earl, the 6-foot-6 shooting guard now is at 225 pounds with 1 percent body fat. The Hornets could wait until after the summer league to trade Smith -- if they trade him at all -- so he can showcase his abilities for opposing scouts. New Orleans Times-Picayune

id offer the 20 pick for him--what on earth are we going to get at 20 with more potential than JR? id give up both picks frankly--if jr was at nc for 1 yr hed be a top 3 pick

Briggs absolutely agree...I'd start with the 29 but I would give up the 20 for him I think-the thing that so decreases his value is Scott Killing him...I mean the dood was almost traded for Brent Barry last year....Brent isn't even worth the 29th pick, ya' know....Maybe if we traded something like Nate and the 29 for JR and a 2nd rounder I'd be happy...I'd like to see a backcourt of Mardy Collins and Smith to see how that would work.

But we'd have to give up a salary to make it work, Briggs...Nate makes almost the exact same amount, as a point of reference so the expirings make too much for NO....

no the two picks==the cost of smith we draft who they want and trade them to NO we are NOT getting a 6-6 two guard with his physical tools at 20-29 and hes perfect for up tempo

i would say most knick fans would be happy with

20-29 for jr and 43 i think there is a nice player at 43

OK...you are saying trade the picks after we draft them...ok, but they still would have to be signed before we trade-for cap purposes- them and then 2 picks that late are going to be almost double than what Smith is making.

As a point of reference-
Warrick (20 last year) makes $1.2 mil this year.
Simien (29 last year) makes $867,000.

Smith makes about 1 mil($997,000).....http://www.hoopshype.com/salaries.htm

I think if you replace Nate with JR and only get rid of one of Caw, Steph and Francis it would be a little more manageable because Smith is a true SG no qualms about it. Q can pop at the 3 or backup the 2.

NO under the cap--+wed have that 43 pick. that would be a maximum offer. id probably start by offering pick 29 alone--then just pick 20 which might get it done by itself

I'd give 20 and 29 for Smith and 43. In my opinion, the Knicks could still take a hard-nosed big man (Craig Smith, Leon "the Show" Powe) or a tough swingman (PJ Tucker, Mike Gansey) at 43 and come away happy.

Smith is a good player, and you know what you're getting.

The Hornets would probably bite, that would give them a whopping FOUR picks in the first round. They could easily package 2 to trade up and still have 2 at the latter end of the first round.

Good deal for both teams.

So of course it won't happen, since the NBA is like a parallel universe, guys like Isiah Thomas (his resume right now shows him running the CBA into the ground, coaching talented Pacer teams out of the first round, and ruining the franchise known as the NY Knicks) repeatedly get second and third chances.

Briggs.. under the cap only matters if your the team taking back the player. Because we are over the cap we have to ship off a player making at least 75% of what JR makes. Because NO is under the cap the can take back more salary. We could take JR and send them Jalen Rose (hypothetical... obviously).

I know he's young but I dont see the fit. He's another scorer and we have QRich locked in for like 4 more years and QWood is an older version of JR anyway. Bigger too. More than anything else I think we need to get rid of guys, not bring more in. Unless I can get a player I think is going to be a bonafid stud. You put JR in that catagory?

I would rather overpay for a guy like Pietrus. Look at what Josh Howard has done.

But Howard was good and showed improvement right off the bat...Pietrus is still just sort of hanging around....I think I'd take a chance on Smith before Pietrus....maybe we can just trade for Howard...

the finances on a trade involving a player making 1 mm is a non-issue. I do think JR is a stud, I do think that if he went to NC for on eyar he woulkd be a top 3 pickw ed be talking about. were talking 6-6 225 SG with long arms a 40 inch vertical and 20 years old who has already had multiplke 20 point and a couple of 30 pt scoring games with solid rebounding. i dont see 1 player or even a combination of 2 at 20-29 that have more potential than JR and i think wed just have to give up 20 to get him.
q woods is actually pretty good, i just dont think hes had the best chances[his own fault] but JR is an even better athlete. hes going to be a real good player all star level imho at his peak pietrus is always hurt

LOL! You need more than 1% just to survive! I guess the point is that he's in great shape.
