Pearl of wisdom on Larry, Knicks
Not that Jim Dolan is much for advice from sensible people, but for what it's worth, one Knick legend said yesterday that he hopes the Garden boss will give Larry Brown a shot at turning around the fortunes of the Knicks - some of whom need to wise up and start working with their coach and one another.
"The coach probably lost them early in the season, and they never played for him after that - not all of them, but a lot of them," Earl Monroe told the Daily News yesterday. "This is a different athlete today than back when I was playing the game. Guys today, they're not as close, they don't always work out their problems together.
"Everyone's got to be able to listen. That's on the players."
Monroe, the slick Knick guard from 1971-80 whose No.15 hangs from the Garden rafters, spoke yesterday as he prepared to hit the road for a summer-long nationwide tour aimed at raising awareness of BPH, a common prostate disorder that affects the bladder, and from which Monroe suffers (www.oneweekchallenge.com). He doesn't plan on giving any roadside interviews, but while he's away, he's hoping his old team refrains from telling Brown to take a hike.
"I definitely think they should try it one more year," Monroe said. "I'd like to see the man get a chance."
Monroe, an occasional voice on Knick radiocasts, also still thinks it's possible for Brown and his unpredictable point guard, Stephon Marbury, to coexist and thrive. And the man they call "The Pearl" sees promise in the man who calls himself "Starbury."
"When I came to New York (in a November 1971 trade), I started deferring to all the guys that were there," Monroe said. "And Red Holzman sat me down and said, "You're losing your ego. You gotta get your ego back.' And soon enough, I was an All-Star.
"I think (Marbury) gets a bad rap sometimes. You gotta have a little ego."
