I have never had that happen to me before... why would you need a product key to open a *.doc file? Where'd you download this file? Someone might just be trying to steal your cd-key. GIve more details please.

Maybe its from a different version of Word than yours? Seems strange. Try to open the file with another app like wordpad or notepad and see if that works.

Do what VDes said Briggs, you shouldn't have any problems opening file like this.

Open up Wordpad or notepad and THEN click open and choose the file you want to open, should work fine.

I *think* BRIGGS is saying he doesn't have the code for his copy of Microsoft Word. I'm guessing he doesn't need to use Word much, otherwise he'd have dealt with this problem before now.

As others have said, WordPad might open the file.

There should have been a code on a separate piece of paper that came with your computer or your copy of Word. If you don't have that code, I think you're SOL.
https:// It's not so hard.

check the Microsoft website for a Word Viewer. It will alloq you to see but not edit the document.

If you don't have a code, relax, they are all over the net.
