Maybe this is Layden and Chaney's way of getting tough with Spree after last season. They seem to want a more serious atmosphere on the team and I dont blame them. However, they are going about it the wrong way - Spree hurt his hand, didnt know it was broken, end of story. They dont need to have it as front page news in the papers and on ESPN - it is making our team look dreadful.
i totally agree that it's time to get tough on spree... we fans keep stating that he's our "emotional leader", our vocal leader, and the heart and soul of our team. but in all reality, he's a terrible leader and he sets a terrible example for our squad.
a leader does not blow off training camps (in the past). a leader does not show up late to home games and get special treatment. a leader does not shout out his teammates (after toronto knocked us out of the playoffs), rather a leader takes responsibility for the outcome of bad games, and gives as much credit to his teammates as to himself for hard fought victories. also, leaders and team players go to voluntary workouts not just to better their own physical capabilities, but to bond with his fellow players and show support and love to the organization and try to enstate a positive vibe for the upcoming season.
BUT at the same time, the way the knicks organization is handling this situation is totally juvenile and inappropriate. they are making mountains out of mole hills and this negative press does not help to to better spree's trade value, nor does it do any good to alienate one of the better perimeter players on the team. there is no doubt in my mind that spree had an obligation to report his injury even though he may have thought it was just a minor bruise or whatnot. afterall, he's getting 12 million dollars this season... the least he could do is fulfill a clause to simply tell the organization of any injury as soon as it happened. spree should have been more RESPONSIBLE but as his history with the knicks has shown, he's never been that.
