Jazz have lost $25M over last two seasons
Associated Press

SALT LAKE CITY -- On the last day of regular NBA play last month, the Utah Jazz reached a break-even record for the season.

Financially, however, they're not even close. The team was more than $10 million in the red, according to owner Larry Miller. And losses for the last two seasons combined approach $25 million, Miller said.

"We're losing a lot of money. Huge numbers," Miller said of the team he has owned for 21 seasons. "Blow-your-mind numbers."

Miller says the losses are painful, but concedes, they're self-inflicted pain.

During the summer of 2004, Miller authorized a quarter-billion dollars in long-term contracts to Jazz players, including $86 million to Andrei Kirilenko, $68 million to Carlos Boozer and $50 million to Mehmet Okur.

That doubled the team's payroll, but Miller hopes those players will eventually put the team in championship contention.

"Being competitive on the floor is important to us, and we believe we are headed in the right direction," Miller said. "You have to be smart about it, and I think we have been. This [loss], it's an eight-digit number. ... But it's something we were prepared for."

is there ANY way we can capitalize on this?

mo + cash + both #1's for boozer (if they ask for one of our young guys like nate or david, we have to do it)

Yeah man, I totally agree. I have been trying to get into that business for quite sometime, and for some reason, they wont agree to my 5 million dollar signing bonus. The people in that business are sick in the head.

It would be cool if we could, but it brings up an interesting question that I always have to ask. And here it is: 'If the NBA is going to have a salary cap (apparently because of New York spending) then why can't management have an option to get out of contracts, or structure them in a way, to make these players 'earn' they're money, especially if these players don't live up to them and teams have an obligation to pay up, no matter what you get'?
I'll never trust this' team again.

A guy like Dirk has a level 2 maybe even 3 ankle sprain and needs a one minute time out to recover. Same with RJ. Boozer tweaks his hamstring and needs 5 years to recover. He's one of the softest players in the league. The Jazz were smart financially and had a ton of cap room. Then they became a model of how NOT to use your cap space. Now they're paying the price.

I think either Boozer or Kmart will be on the Knicks next season.
