Bird Expects To Build Around Jermaine
11th May, 2006 - 12:38 am

Canoe.ca - Larry Bird likes the talent the Pacers already have and said on Wednesday that the players on the club will either have to shape up or be shipped out.

"They're the ones that have to make the changes," he said. "If they can't make the changes, yes, we have to look to move them."

Despite trade rumours, Bird said he expects to build around Jermaine O'Neal.

"Jermaine O'Neal is our best player on this team. Everybody on this team knows Jermaine's our guy," Bird said. "I can't sit here today and say we're going to pursue to trade Jermaine O'Neal. There's not one time that we ever called anybody and said 'Hey, are you interested in Jermaine O'Neal?'

"I don't know who out there you could trade Jermaine for and get somebody better."

KG's better & i think they could reasonably make an offer for him using JO as trade bait.

yeah but why? JO is younger and cheaper. KG is much better, but how long will he perform at that level?

That could be possible and it would make sense.

It makes tons of sense.....they both have players that would probably fit better on the other team.

They don't think that way though.....GM's are all retarded. Like Paxson the Bulls GM.....does anyone think he is a genius? His roster and the moves he's made don't make sense but they still win....that's a whole different thread I guess.

holy schnikeys....that does deserve a different thread. i am curious to see why you think so.

but as for jermaine, if what bird says is true, then that's one less possibility of frye getting traded.

jermaine is good. kg is better. they're two years apart. i would take kg. he's more durable. jermaine misses alot of time with those BS injuries.

KG's all of 30 years old, & the difference in their salaries is not going to be a dealbreaker (JO's due to make $18m next year, KG will make $20m)... KG's got at least another 4 VERY good years left in him if not more... the question is would KG elevate them to title contention? & the answer is certainly no if you consider the fact that he hasn't been able to elevate his own team in MIN to title contention in all the years he's been there either... but if you're looking to upgrade at the PF spot, then a JO for KG deal does make sense... you can probably do something like this:

IND trades JO, Tinsley & Croshere
MIN trades KG, Jaric & Blount

- that gives MIN some cap relief (Croshere's expiring deal in exchange for Blount's longterm deal) & gets them a younger franchise player & an upgrade at PG.
- for IND, they get a better franchise player & shore up their frontcourt w/more bulk in Blount.

IND's new team:
C - Foster / Blount
PF - KG / Harrison
SF - Peja / Granger
SG - Jax / Jones / Jaric
PG - Jasikevicius / AJ

if they sign a significant MLE free agent, like a Reggie Evans, they would be legitimate title contenders in my view.

What Bird said would carry more weight if he didn't say the same about Ron Artest earlier this year.

I am never surprised who gets traded in any sport anymore. The more the GM denies the more I say ok that guy is getting ship no doubt.

Jermaine O'Neal not getting traded to NY would be a blessing b/c then we could actually BUILD OUR OWN FUCKIN TEAM!
DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

from what I've read, Stephen Jackson sounds like he is a trade bait. Maybe Tinsley too since his BYC status is up this summer.

I love O'Neil but without Jackson, that team is a huge joke. Jackson is such an underrated player. O'Neil blows hot and cold now adays. One game is bruising everyone in the post, knocking down jumpers, the next its like you are wondering if he is injured or something.
