Among the free agent small forwards the Knicks are considering signing is Miami's Jimmy Jackson. Scott Burrell is also a candidate.

With Sprewell and Lavor Postell both out at least six weeks, the Knicks have no backup for Shandon Anderson at small forward. Chaney said he may use Clarence Weatherspoon at the "3," feeling he's quick enough defensively. Chaney said former first-round pick Tim James is the backup for now.

I think Jackson would be an excellent pick-up. He put up solid numbers in Miami last year and would do the same in new york. I also think we should give Tim James a shot at some playing time in the preseason because from what i hear he's a freak athlete, good rebounder, and solid defender. I think we definitely need Jackson though. Thuoghts?

I'm interested to see what Spoon can do at the 3. It will be nice to have a size advantage at a postion for once. We are also in need of a backup 2 guard though with Postell out as well, so adding Jackson or Burrell would probably be a good thing.

I think I'd rather have some of those Power Forwards we have in abundance try and fill those positions... They would only be back-ups so only need to put forth a HARDDDD 10 moinutes before Shandon, or Houston come back in... And I like the size advantage at either position if we do do that. I would hate to sign 2 guys that will eventually just vegetate on the bench when Spree and Postell come back to the lineup...

Layden must be happy. He now gets to see how Houston handles being "the man". If he handles it well the Knicks WILL trade Spree. I think Spree was told to stay home to see how the team does totally without him.

agreed here. Spoon and Anderson need the minutes. And Spree's injury may be a small blessing in disguise during the preseason for these 2 as well as Houston.

Well this has turned out to be an interesting training camp...so what do you guys think? Think Houston will take command without Spree or do you think this is all just going to blow over? Personally I see the team being stronger with Spree then without him. But we will see what happens.

Spoon can't play the 3!! he's 270pds and doesn't have the quickness of a three and no ball handling skills. He's suitable to play inside since he is a ferocious rebounder. I guess it wouldn't hurt to try.

But Spoon did play the 3 in his career! Derrick Coleman played the 4! I forgot who the team was, but the coach said something funny, "I've got a 3 who thinks he's a 4 and a 4 who thinks he's a 3!".

Spoon can only get away with playing 3 if we had a nasty PG. The team would be too stiff to play him at the 3. We need movement.

I think the key for Spoon is LIMITED minutes at the 3 spot - not the whole game...Just to spell Anderson, Which allows Harrington to spell Dice, while Doleac spells KT...

It seems like Tyrone Nesby is the top candidate now. He would be a good pick-up because he's big, athletic, young, and doesn't look for a lot of shots. He would be a true role player on this team, something we need more of. In addition to Nesby and Jackson, Walt Williams is also a possibility.

Nesby is an aquired taste. He is 1 dimensional. He is scorer. He not great on d, or passing. give himthe rock and get out of his way.

From Hoopsworld rumor mill
The Latrell Sprewell story is getting uglier by the minute. Apparently, Spree not only broke his hand this off-season, reports are saying he broke his hand in a fight on his boat this summer. The Knicks had asked Sprewell not to attend training camp in South Carolina instructing him to stay home. The Knicks leadership is expected to meet with Sprewell, and from that meeting they will decide a course of action. The Knicks have said that Sprewell’s failure to ‘promptly’notify them of the injury is a breach of his contract, one they could pursue, but are not likely to void. The Knicks are expected to slap a hefty fine on Spree, along with a suspension (meaning they won’t have to pay him). Rumor has it Sprewell is sick of the way the Knicks are treating him and is expected to ask for a trade this week, according to a source close to him. Media reports say despite the acquisition of Antonio McDyess, Spree is still not satisfied with the improvement made in the frontcourt, and that that constant trade speculation has Spree seeking life elsewhere. Associates of Sprewell have been telling media for several weeks that Spree was eager to play in Milwaukee and was very disappointed when the rumor of a Glenn Robinson trade fell through, and he ultimately ended up in Atlanta. The word is Spree wants a fresh start, and if the Knicks play hardball with him over this injury, he may force the issue.

IN RELATED: The Knicks are apparently close to a deal with Tyrone Nesby, reports from the region say Ty could join the Knicks in the next day or so and serve as a replacement for Sprewell at least for the time being. The hold up on the deal is Nesby’s insistence on a guaranteed deal. The agent for Walt Williams say his client is also in the running for a deal in New York. Nebsy, Williams and Jim Jackson have all been contacted about the Knicks needs.

Now I know where Spoon played 3 and Coleman played 4. Philadelphia. Spoon averaged 18.1 points and 6.4 rebounds in that team's up-tempo style. Now if I can just remember the coach.
