hey guys, this board looks like the same frame work as the boards on my PHP server one of my hosting companies runs.

I know that board stored messages in a backend MySQL database, if this is the case, maybe you could create a makeshift search?

we use mostly Microsoft tools and software. The forums software is homegrown.

Putting together the search funtionality is easy enough. One of the questions Andrew and I are talking about is what kind of limits do we put on the posting to old threads. Should we open up everything? Allow the ability to only reply to threads that are, say, less than 3 months old (but you could always link to an old thread for quoting purposes)?

For me, dredging up old threads for a good laugh is OK every once in a while, but I think it will get played very quickly, but maybe I am off base too.

Maybe everyone can help us out. Feedback please.

Yeah, then I'd be able to stop bookmarking! JK

I like the idea of a search function. I don't see the harm in bringing back threads of any age as long as there's no malicious intent from bringing the thread back.

Cancel all personal and professional obligations...then...Git 'er dun!

Sorry.

My feeling is that there should be no limits on replied-to-threads. I've seen resurrected threads take on new life, and they fade again naturally. Why not see how it goes before applying limits to it?

Also, it might help eliminate redundant threads created because people don't want to find the old thread.

Search+quote--> a match made in oohah heaven!

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

BTW, one piece of functionality we ARE going to add is the ability to bookmark a post of thread. Go to your profile page (or something like it) and there they all are, "bookmarked" within the site itself. Don't know why more forum software app out there don't do it. Came to me the other week.

point taken. If the group is OK with it, that will certainly sway the developers of this site.

How about this idea, and this has nothing to do with searching: Avatars!

Or will that blow your bandwidth?

I just take a look at RealGM and the like and 99% of the avtars suck. Chicks and rappers and the like. Nothing very interesting going on and it would end up being another thing Andrew and I would have to keep after.

course, we could be persuaded. I can think of a couple of different solutions that would work.

I'd love some sort of indicator of the threads I've posted in. Sometimes it's hard to find one's way back to a conversation they participated in.

I would love to see a search feature, or something like it . One site I visit shows what threads a person has posted in when you look at his profile. Could be a pretty long list for those with 5000+ posts though.

Very good idea. Out of interest, how did you think this up?

A search option would be great. Most of us just want to rub prior comments in each others faces. That would make for some crazy discussions.....but I guess that's what you guys are afraid of, huh? It's worht a test....you guys can dump it anytime you want if it goes all to hell.

Another thing...avatars on this site would be great......but they should be rewarded to guys that have reached a certain number of posts....I guess that way you can trust that the regulars won't go crazy and just drive you guys crazy trying to moderate.....maybe 2,000 posts?

Why not open up a Archive section? Like after a few days of being idle, the thread could be moved to an archive section where the seach engine is located. I'm not familiar with any of the software or what it takes to run these sites....I'm just kinda throwing stuff ou there.

Also what happened to the Fantasy Section idea? Maybe that can lanch around September just in time for next season.....

Search capabilities would be cool. An ignore function would be cool too. The bookmark function sounds good as well. Keep up the good work guys.

I'd like to see a search function. Not for the I told you so's, but some of threads in the past actually had interesting content that would be worth looking up for reference.

people WILL bring up "i told you so" threads...but if they do, the author can always delete it or modify it.

I don't plan to do that because I don't get any fun out of it and I'm sure people could bring back many of my threads where I looked foolish. But I don't see why people are so afraid of that happening. This is honestly the only forum I've ever posted in where there was such enormous concern about bringing back old threads.

I agree with this point.

also, a search function would be cool, but with so many similar thread titles, it might be very hard to actually find anything. maybe include thread author as a search option, so as to help narrow it down?
