NEW YORK (AP) -- Larry Brown knows the Knicks need new players, even wondering Wednesday if he should be the one coaching them.

Before the Knicks hosted Cleveland, the Hall of Fame coach acknowledged that some players are no longer listening to him as they wind down his dismal first season in New York.

"I think there are some that probably are tuning us out and I think some that are making progress," Brown said.

Even after their 96-94 victory over the Cavaliers, the Knicks have an NBA-worst 20-54 record despite owning the league's largest payroll. Brown thinks some players have just stopped trying. He felt that was the case again Tuesday night in the Knicks' 105-90 loss at Washington.

"I've been doing this forever, I haven't had trouble with getting guys to respond," he said. "Never. You bang heads for a little while, but eventually they know you care and you want to make them better.

"I've never had a problem before in that regard. You can go and say isolated incident here or there, but I don't think I've ever remembered anybody telling me my teams didn't play hard, didn't try to guard or didn't try to play unselfishly."

Brown publicly feuded with point guard Stephon Marbury and has been critical of rookie Nate Robinson. He pointed out that the Philadelphia Eagles cut ties with Terrell Owens because of his insubordination, and the Knicks may have to do the same with the players that won't work under Brown.

Brown reiterated he won't quit. But if team president Isiah Thomas or owner James Dolan prefer the players over the coach, he knows he could be the one to go.

"It depends on Isiah and Mr. Dolan, what they think of me," he said. "If they don't want to do what you ask them to do and you're going to be the coach, why would you have them around?

"You surround yourself with people that care about doing the right thing and I think that's what we've got to do. If they think I can't do it I understand, but I'm not giving up."

If the Knicks fire Brown this Summer, I'll no longer remain a Knicks fan.

If the Knicks fire Larry Brown or get him to resign it will be a dark day in Knicks land and in the NBA. It will mean that the NBA has truly turned into nothing more then a glorified And1 Mixtape tour where players only care about crossovers and offense instead of set offenses and defense. There is no way in hell that the current Knick players should be able to run this asylum. I'll take Larry Brown everyday of the year before I take 1 current Knicks.

I don't think any coach can walk in and coach a team that is not suited for Internation competition. Everyone wants to say that the US fell flat on their face because they should have won gold easily but that really isnt't the case anymore. Basketball has spread across the world and these countries across the world play a more fundamental team game that is condusive to the International style; this is something that the US does not do. If you notice, Jerry Colangelo has decided to change the way that the USA goes about the Olympics by making it more of a long-term committment instead of a bunch of players showing up and going out and not playing together as a team like most of the other countries do. Everyone wants to use the Olympics as their example of how Larry Brown sucks but things have changed, the world has caught up to the USA in basketball.

Amare Melo Bron Wade were all there and none of them played. two months later when the NBA season started, they were four of the best players in the game. the rules are different in the international game, but I would like to see a trapezoid lane stop Amare. Melo had one of the only midrange games on the entire team. I think Brown did a horrible job and I said as much at the time.

I think Brown has made mistakes, but - if the Knicks fire him - that will be how many coaches in the past five years? How many coaches do the Knicks have to hire and fire before we reailize it isn't just the coach?

It made sense firing Lenny Wilkens. Why wouldn't it make sense to fire Larry Brown.

Same credentials, only wilkens has more wins.

Please David Stern don't allow the direction of NY to be left in the hands of proven incompetents and nincompoops for 5 more years. Keep Brown, Fire Thomas, Hire Kiki.

If they fire him, Dolan is a goofball, if they force him to retire, than that's the same as Wilkens, and I'm ok with that. Wilkens did a far better job with far less talent.

This year brown has clearly shown he is out of touch with today's NBA (detroit and san antonio are not today's nba, they are dinosaurs, the suns, lakers, nuggets, wizards, even the nets are today's nba), but if he can do some soul searching over the summer the realize you just can quit on your players in the same manner they "quit on you" and find a way to reach them either by a sit down or modifying your methods, then maybe we may work this thing out, but this "my way or the highway" philosophy won't cut it anymore.

Look what happened to melo and bron's game when they got rid of the "my way or highway" coaches. For every 1 player that has improved (crawford) we have 5 that have digressed.

I'd rather sacrifice a crawford and a jackie B to have Rose, Marbury, Franchise and Curry playing to their potential. I'll take a Lee and Frye missed block out or assignment to see them make the plays that they make and continue to learn from their mistakes ON THE FLOOR.

That's just MHO, we already know the small minority of the board that live and die by LB's words, and if that is the truth, you have to take it from him when he says maybe HE has to go.

I'd rather LB AND the Players change. I support both. I think LB can work it out with whomever he has a problem with, however, with marbury on the bench these last couple of blowouts, I don't see how everyone can continue to say he's STILL ONLY talking about MARBS.
