there is NO doubt Marbury would get a full MLE if he became available. The Knicks owe him 60mm$ What the Knicks can do is offer him 35 as a buyout and let Mabury go free to any team he chooses next year. The buyout would LOWER the luxury tax payment i.e

payments of 11.85 *3 would save roughly
20mm in luxury payments, making the contract palatable to ownership to eat.

I don't know if any team would be willing to deal with the Knicks straight up with Marbury now and obviously this cant continue into next year, in fact they should try to get rid of it now.

Its a fair deal Marbury gets his $$$ but also gets to choose his next destination. the Knicks pay another--hopefully LAST price for fcking with this stupid business model.

eww, I wouldnt be suprised if the war with brown has lowered his value, but buying him out would be to accept that he has NO trade value at all, I'm pretty sure we can trade him for something.

I posted below we should give him DNPs the rest of the year, let him think about how he wants to play- I don't know which would hurt his already low value playing or not playing

Cablevision is a big company. They could come up with a nice package both for them and Marbury. Yes they would have to eat a nice chunk, but if they can buy him out for roughly half and save on the luxury payments, it might be better served than just bringing in other problems.

Big corporations spend HUGE$$$ at times to make problems dissapear. Just think about hOW much CVC spent on that West Side Stadium jargin. Eating some money from Marbury--although its not the type of busines you want to do, might be the best route. Now Marbury would have to accept HALF knowing tht he would make it up with an MLE--meaning he could go to any of the other 20+ teams who would offer it.

buying him out for $35 mil is just a bit more than buying shandon out for $21.

dolan wouldn't flinch twice b/c as briggs said, they SAVE money via the luxury tax so it's a fiscally responsible move since trading steph would yield in equal contracts in return.

as for buyouts - you would think they would throw a few bucks anucha's way, no?

You know what - even if you buy someone out they still count against your cap and luxe tax.

No it wouldn't

Or I should say the remaning dollars would count--i.e

35mm over 3

11.875 11.875 11.875 would be taxed instead of

20-20-20

From the CBA FAQ....

The agreed-upon buy-out amount (see question number 59) is included in the team salary instead of the salary called for in the contract. If the player had more than one season left on his contract, then the buy-out money is distributed among those seasons in proportion to the original salary. For example, say a player had three seasons remaining on his contract, with salaries of $10 million, $11 million and $12 million. The player and team agree to a buyout of $15 million. The $15 million is therefore charged to the team salary over the three seasons. Since the original contract had $33 million left to be paid, and $10 million is 30.3% of $33 million, 30.3% of the $15 million buyout, or $4.545 million, is included in the team salary in the first season following the buyout. Likewise, 33.33% of $15 million, or $5 million, is included in the team salary in the second season, and 36.36% of $15 million, or $5.455 million, is included in the team salary in the third season.

The distribution of the buy-out money is a matter of individual negotiation. Changing the number of years in which the money is paid does not change the number of years in which the team's team salary is charged. In the above example in which the player's contract is bought out with three seasons remaining, the buyout amount is always charged to the team salary over three seasons. It does not matter if the player is actually paid in a lump sum or over 20 years (a spread provision).

If you can buy him out for roughly half, you basically break-even on the contract factoring the lux tax.

the problem w/that is NY is the place Marbury wants to be... he's been wanting to play here his whole career & now he's got the chance... too bad he's too stupid & arrogant to know that he's screwing it all up by conflicting w/the head coach.

i doubt they buy him out.

if chris webber can be traded, so can starbury.......
DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

i agree... i think he can be traded... MIN & ATL are possible trading partners imo... ideally we can offer Marbury & the SA pick in exchange for Al Harrington & a filler contract like Tyronn Lue... if not, pursue something w/MIN where we take back their crap contracts but get their lottery pick for Marbury straight up.

I just visited the realgm Minny forums and the consensus there is that they are willing to take Statbury back. They want Hudson and his contract out the door and is willing to give their 1st RD pick for this to happen. I hope this is the general feeling in Wolves country and Frankenstein would be stoopid enough to make this move.

Why would you get their pick. If Marbury is so bad, just take Blount, Hudson and Madsen.

Cause we would be getting garbage back. Well, maybe not Blount.
