i would've let the contracts expire instead.. better yet, if you're gonna get him, should've surrounded him with a defensive unit in the lineup..

I chose yes, here's my reasoning why. At the time of this trade, the Knicks were in huge need for a player like Marbury; a potential all-star and someone too build their team around. In theory, Marbury needed the Knicks as much as they needed him. Marbury needed to come back to home to the city where he grew up, to win and too vindicate himself from all the knocks that were put on him by the media. In theory this should have been a perfect marriage... thats why I chose yes. I feel it was something the Knicks needed to take a chance on.

Today the trade looks bad but I think it was a chance the Knicks needed to take but since the trade, nothing has changed with Marbury. He still has the same knocks on him as when he came in which are; he's not a leader, he's a primadona, his 20&8 is extremely misleading. If Marbury isn't going to change at home then he's never going to change.

I agree with all of that. I think in 2003 when Marbury was 26 and coming off a strong 45 win season with the Suns in which he was a WARRIOR in the playoffs against the Spurs, the trade did make sense and I don't regret supporting the trade at the time. But if I had had a crystal ball in 2003 and could see what would happen by 2006, I wouldn't have made the trade.

I vote yes. Same reason as previously mentioned. NY lacked a star player. Marbury was brought here with the understanding that the guy would be playing next to one of the league best shooters of all time. Pretty sad to reflect on what could have been. Same with Ewing. The guy was unlucky that he never played with a Kiki, Harper, or an LJ in their prime. The failing has not so much been Marbury but Isiah, coaches, lazy teammates. My fear is that it doesn't matter who you bring in here. Be it Kobe, Lebron, or any other guard type. The league is not structure for big market teams anymore.

ugh nothing urks me more than the Allan Houston excuse. The only understanding was that H20 knees would put him on the self for an extended period of time which it ultimately did.

I said no...i was a huuuuge supporter of Marbury and i still like him as a player...but basketball isnt about having the most talent its about how you influence others on the court with you. Marbury is a great player without a doubt but he seems to have a hard time grasping the team concept....if he gets traded this offseason i'll still root him, but i just find it alarming that whereever he left some kind of foul aura amongst the team.

I hope all goes well in Marburys career, but he wont be championship caliber player until he decides to put his ego aside and listen to the coach for the better of the team.

You have the timing wrong. At the time of the Marbury trade, Allan said he felt pretty good, he was averaging about 19 PPG, only missed a few games, and doctors said he'd be fine. Isiah didn't know more than Allan or the team doctors about Allan's knee. He could have reasonably expected the team's backcourt to be set at Marbury and Houston.

i loved the trade when it happened. i still liked during last season. now i hate it. has anyone noticed that this fits in exactly with a pattern for marbury, he has never been in one place for more than 3 years! and hopefully we will continue the pattern in the off-season and let franchise take over at the point. if we hadnt made the trade we would have had a top five pick that year, howard, okafor, deng, livingston, gordon, are just some of the names that would have been available, at quite a cheaper price.

If Isiah did just the Marbury trade and stopped messing with the team from then on, and Allan had managed to stay healthy, it would've been interesting. I think Allan, Keith, Mutombo and KT complimented Marbury very well. Since then it's become a mish-mosh.

So, I guess my feeling is mixed. I'd say it really depends on the direction you're going. With the direction we've gone, I'd say no to Marbury, so that's what I voted. No.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Just to add to that: When the Knicks acquired Marbury in Jan of 2003, Houston had played in 30 out of 35 games (86%) and had averaged 20.2 PPG in those games.

I never would have made the trade even at the time. I was scared off by marbury's attitude and contract, yes it' true that NY needed a star but there more appropriate ways to get one, namely through high draft picks.
from a asset standpoint, even though it look like we made out like bandits, I was never entirely convinced of that becuase it was very possible that marbury's attitude combined with the fact that the knicks didnt have the assets to assemble a winning team, and his contract, could potentially reduce his trade value almost to the point where it isnt more than what we gave up to get him. I always thought that in the long run we could better the team more efficiently by maintaining an low salary, and accumilating draft high picks, than by trying to immediatley increase the value of our assets, like Isiah has done, becuase that seems too risky to me, but who knows, maybe it will.

Maybe you haven't been reading this board for long enough, but the minute the Knicks hired Isiah, Isles has been predicting doom. We've all argued with him to death. So far, he hasn't been too far off with his predictions. You're late to the game with all this optimism stuff. We were doing that the last two years. Guess what? After two years of watching overpaid underachievers phone it in, reality sets in. You're optimistic, that's cool, we get it. Reality is the Knicks record. Optimism has been wrong more often than not.

eVil - big deal. It never ceases to amaze me how people derive more pleasure from being "right" than having their so-called team of choice do well.

Who said the statute of limitations for correcting the post-Ewing years of cumulative bad decisions was two years?

If you understood sports, you might realize that chganging the direction for an entire franchise, after nearly a decade of poor decision-making, is not a Jiffy Pop type of deal.
