and they did it in the Knicks face. How did they overhaul that great frontline of the Davis boys Rik Smitz Derrick Mckey etc.. and stay in the playoff picture after having nearly the exact same success the Knicks had in the 90s? they had the foresight and the blls to trade out OLDER core players for the HUGE talent base they have now. They were that close to taking out the Nets and really gave the nets their best series minus the Lakers last year and that was without harrington.. Now they are LOADED with high caliber talent with only 1 aging vet. Using THEIR core players they were able to get into the lottery and make some key acquisitions of young talent and then moving a bit more for defensive balance and a nice center in the east. sure they made some mistakes along the way like almost every club has but their combination of GMs Donnie Walsh and Isiah Thomas+the leftover flux from Larry Bird set this franchise up for the next 10 years.
when we had our chances to let Ewing's contract run dry sell latrell sprewell at a peak knowing we had two 2s and some precient drafting instead of the awful picks we took along with giving up some unneccesary 1s while trading for players like Harrington and mark Jackson
I'm very intimidated that this team is headed for complete and utter oblivion for years thats why i spoke up the last couple of weeks. Our GM and our owner are respective laughing stocks among their peers. I could make an inside joke about what one of my bosses said about Dolan but this is a basketball forum and I'd like to stay on topic.
This franchise has made just brutal blunder after blunder and i see 0 sign of it stopping. While some may or may not like the Mcdyess trade--this much is clear--we should've been more adamant about NOT trading Camby without having a suitable back up. even if we used the combination of Ward and Harrington+the pick it wouldve satisfied the CBA. For those screaming about Camby being frail look around the league at guys like theo ratliff lorenzo wright they all seem to be effected by the same affliction. The key for the Knicks wouldve been to cut his minutes a bit and scale back the total amount of games he played like they do with shaq and save him for the playoffs. But alas he is gone.
Now here is some more stupidity that continues we sign Mike doleac the BIG banging 6-11 260 pds back-up center who really plays small forward. You see i doubt most Knick fans actually watched doleac over the last few years unless they had the nBA package on their dish and was willing to watch Orlando. Make NO mistake about it you will find out soon enough HE IS NOT a center he may have the size of a center but that means NOTHING. Ben wallace is 6-7 1/2 245 and HE IS a center Alonzo is 6-10 250 pds he IS a center Mike doleac doesnt have ANY of their attributes. He is a small forward in a centers body.
now let me see if I can make some common sense here-- jermaine oneal traded for dale davis-----kurt thomas traded [probably in a three way] for stromile swift? who made out better in the jermaine oneal trade the team trading for the veteran or the team who traded for the up and coming young player? No brainer! are they centers? well they are not quote on quote centers but this league has changed because of lack of quality supply.
What was the Knicks worst problem last year besides having no one who could score coming off the bench? Interior defense. when PGs blew past MJ no one else was there except camby when he wasnt injured--- while Kurt thomas can score and rebound he is not a shot blocking threat and he doesnt thwart any movement to the paint. he is tough and he is skilled but if you USe some common sense and look what Indiana did for themselves both long and short term--a smart GM would go after that talent if they were faced with the Knicks dilemna. Not only does this team as constructed have so many holes defensively it is aging. They need to atleast take one hedge towards the future. Stomile plays bigger than Kurt and if we consider Kurt our 5 we can consider the combination of Swift and Mcdyess a 4-5 combo. It brings the team some much needed shot blocking athletiscm and speed. It hedges Mcdyess and the future of this franchise. Some good hard work can get it done iMO.
Do you think layden has even thought on this subject nah he has fairy tale dreams of making us smaller with NVE and worse perhaps Bradley:>(((((((( or better yet he is trying to deal with Pat riley to give his enemies ZO!!!!!! who knows hat happened ith mutumbo but the only true account from a credible source rOD THORN said the Knicks were trying to move on Mutumbo on draft night
we need a nice combo GM like Magic Johnson and Michael Cooper to make the personal decisions and bring back respect to the upper management of this franchise. But I doubt at this point cablevision would be willing to payoff the fortune they owe scotty boy and have to pony up$$$$ foir credible new guys+++ there is no way magic would take a job without full intent on winning whatever it takes.
