Colangelo to be Raptors' new GM: sources

MICHAEL GRANGE AND ROBERT MACLEOD

Globe and Mail Update

The Toronto Raptors have got their man.

Sources in Phoenix said this morning that Bryan Colangelo will be leaving the only National Basketball Association organization he's ever known to assume the role of president and general manager of the Raptors. According to sources, a formal announcement will be made in Toronto on Tuesday.

Colangelo is expected to resign from the Suns today and his position with the Raptors will be effective immediately.

"There are some final details to workout with the Suns regarding his situation that's where it right now," an NBA source told The Globe and Mail just before noon. "There will be something more later, but it is not out of the realm of possibility to say he's coming to Toronto."

An official announcement is pending, but sources close to both Suns managing partner Robert Sarver and Colangelo indicate the Raptors month-long courtship of the 40-year-old reigning executive of the year is over, and has been successful.

While their have been a number of logistical issues to work out -- Colangelo needs to divest himself of a small ownership stake in the Suns and the Raptors may have to compensate Phoenix -- the final obstacle for Colangelo has been merely coming to grips with moving from his long-time home and franchise his father has been associated since in was founded in 1968.

"It's related to family," a Phoenix source told The Globe Sunday night regarding Colangelo's mind-set over the weekend in advance of the Feb. 28th deadline Sarver had given him to decide if he was going to stay with the Suns or not. "[He] has a gut feeling, it's just the final though process now."

Sources in Phoenix said that Sarver was expecting the situation to be resolved today.

bad news for us and philly...

Eh, whatever. Colangelo isn't exactly the greatest GM either. Think of it this way, if it wasn't for Isiah being such an idiot they would have never had the cap space to sign Nash and they'd still be a mediocre franchise.

The exact guy we should have gone after. Like I say all along, you need a GM with a solid business sense.

I don't really remember the situation all that well, but was Marbury really the only offer they got for Kidd?

jason kidd had a domestic violence situation. colangelo didn't want any off the court nonsense associated with his players. so he moved kidd for marbury.

marbury helped them get to game 6 vs. the spurs. then the team went with a new coach and a new vision and he wanted steph gone. so they dumped him (along with penny). don't forget, steph also had a dui infraction where he spent a night or weekend in jail.

whatever the case, it all worked out for colangelo and the suns and everything isiah has been associated with (post player days) has been turned to mush.

I know about the domestic violence thing, but was Marbury the only choice Colangelo had? Marbury, a guy who requested a trade from his first TWO teams (Milwaulkee included) and couldn't get along with his teammates on the third? Sounds like he was replacing off the court issues with more off the court issues.

I'm not saying Isiah is a better GM than Colangelo because everyone and their mother knows he's not, but please, lets not make Colangelo look like the GMing god.

Bryan was under his father when they dumped kidd, and dumped Marbs.

Salaries were dumped prior to sale of team to Sarver.

New owner approaved Nash signing. New owner (sarver) is very hands on and did not want to spend on Joe Johnson.

Lets give Byran his due, but its silly to think a GM can recreate magic twice.

Too much credence is given to past performance. Many were chomping at the bit when Isiah came to town and were all too eager to throw Laydog out.

The Owner drives the team, not the GM!

Toronto rises, philly falls. ONe goes up, one comes down.

Im not worried about Toronto, We control our own destiny!

Besides you heard Isiah: we have the best owner in sports!

AKA, the dumbest!

All GM's have their bone head marks!

Dumars has done a great job, but he also drafted Darko!

NBA.com: And Stephon Marbury had an incredible year as well. Did you anticipate it would take a year or two for him to really make a mark?
Colangelo: "Nobody anticipated we would have taken a step back like we did [missing the playoffs in Marbury’s first year with the team]. But things worked out, fortunately for us. Fortunately for me if you really want to know. But Stephon deserves a lot of credit for the way he carried himself during that time. It shows the character he’s got. That guy’s a warrior."

For the next few seasons, it's going to be Toronto & NJ battling for the Atlantic title.

Us? We'll be one of the 5 worst teams in the entire league.

Maybe Colangelo will still want Marbury. Marbs only has 3 years left on the contract he himself gave Marbs.
