New York Daily News - Isiah Thomas is either not an early riser or he's closing in on another deal.

The Knicks' president was conspicuously absent from yesterday's game and the official word from the club was that Thomas is out of town on business. That business could include trying to swing a trade for Portland forward/center Theo Ratliff, a deal that Thomas has been working on for months.

The Knicks, according to a league source, are willing to trade Penny Hardaway's contract for Ratliff, while the Blazers would prefer to expand the trade to include Ruben Patterson and David Lee. Thomas and Larry Brown have said repeatedly that they aren't looking to part with any of their younger players.

Acquiring Ratliff certainly would pacify Brown, who said as recently as Friday that he is looking for a shot-blocker.

If this trade happens, i will cry, cry, and then cry again.

I feel like this, if Larry wants Ratliff that bad then he must have something left in the tank. I will assume that his desire to acquire dude comes from scouting him out and keeping a close eye on his play THIS season and not his past. Sometimes players don't give maximum effort once they are in a bad situation where, for years, and they feel they are not being utilized correctly by their respective coach. I don't condone this but it's the truth. It happened with Jalen Rose (who only really gave effort this year when it was time for the deadline to creep up) and also players like Steve Francis who is going to explode when he gets traded.

I am going to assume that Larry has been keeping close watch on Ratliff and feels he fits the scheme of things here. Maybe he feels like Ratliff can be a AD type on this team with a little more shotblocking.

But if he's wrong I'm gonna ultimately hate the trade.

I'd take Ratliff if they get Rose or Taylor involved.
Ratliff, Patterson & Telfair/Blake/Jack (I don't even care which one of them because all of them are good) for Penny, Malik & Lee.

Nah man.....penny for ratliff is too much already. if they want Lee they must be smoking some of that **** that Rasheed, Isiah Rider, and the rest of the old jailblazers left behind in the locker room.

edit: I'm looking at the trade and I can't see how this trade is going to make sense.....unless Isiah is gonna stick Portland with a contract. Even then I can't see it happening straight up. Maybe another team is gonna be involved.

There has to be a draft pick or something else included to compensate us for taking back Theo's contract. Sometimes articles don't mention picks and just mention the players involved.

1. I don't want Ratliff.
2. But if they accept JJ & Q, and throw in Jaret Jack or Blake, I'd do it.

u dont pay someone 11mm per for 4 pts and 5 reb. hes a role player. there is no way on this earth that we should get involved with him, hes not the same player
portland grossly overpaid him and he is not worthy of an ending contract unless Portland was throwing us an unprotected lottery pick

it just wouldn't make sense to get theo, even if there is a pick, unless Jerome James is shipped.

We already have one overpaid 7 foot stiff on the roster, no sense in having two.

Dear Isiah,

Don't trade David Lee!

We don't need Radcliff, and we don't need Ruben Patterson. WE don't want him.

Don't do it! Please.

Getting a pick is a lesser evil. You could make a case that an unprotected lottery pick has a reasonable possibility to turn out to be a franchise player worth multi-millions to a team. Thats why you rarely see unprotected picks fly. Go look at drafting history of the first 13 picks. EVERY year there is a player[s] taken in the top 13 or so that end up being a big time NBA player. One player could be the difference. Take Dirk Nowitski off the Mavs and what are they worth-- he's a 10 pick? How much has he been worth to that team? Hundreds of millions over his tenure.

But let's face reality, the darn blazers aren't giving us sht. They want US to compensate them for the right to have Theo play 16 minutes for 22mm a year. Scrw off John Nash.

I agree with you & if Isiah does any kind of deal to help portland out with salary relief, then it better not be one but two unprotected picks coming our way.

If we trade Penny for Ratliff and get nothing in return, I'm calling for Isiahs head. What's the point? Ratliff sucks. We suck. He's only getting worse. How's he gonna help. Maybe he'll produce a couple more wins with some shotblocking, but it's still gonna be a smokescreen for the fact that everyone on the team, besides Malik Rose, sucks on defense.

Larry wants him. He said he needs a shotblocker and if you remember he coached him in Philly before asking to have him traded for Mutumbo. So far we've heard the name George Lynch, we've heard Eric Snow and now we're hearing another one of LB's soldiers (Ratliff). I don't think this is Isiah. I think this is Larry calling for his old wolves.....unfortunately.

Dude, it ain't gonna work. These "Old Wolves" are not taking us anywhere close to the promise land. Nice metaphor btw. But I don't see any evidence that Isiah wants Ratliff. I think Isiah can pick out a better shotblocker, and if he really really really wanted one, who would make that Earl Watson deal make sense, and maybe force Denver to fork over Camby and convince them he's too injured or something. It ain't gonna happen, but I can dream, right?

Exactly. That's why I said 'unfortunately'. We'll see what happens. I personally don't think it's going to happen. I DO believe there will be a trade but I'm thinking someone else is coming to NYC. But hey, who knows?

the Jerome James signing isn't enough evidence to the contrary?
