A few months ago I wrote Trevor Ariza would make an intriguing candidate for point guard if he worked at it during the Summer. I have the copyright in my wallet. His defensive ability and intuition (ie. high basketball IQ at only 20) would make him a valuable backcourt asset playing alongside a scorer.

From the NYTimes -

"In (Marbury's) absence, Ariza, who fell out of the small forward rotation, and Brown's favor, several weeks ago, may play as the backup point guard. He has been working at the position in practice.

"I don't know if he's ready, but he tries every day and we've been messing around with him and it's kind of fun to watch him," Brown said."

Visionary Shift Du Jour

Ariza - a 6'7 point guard with defense

Woods - a 6'8 shooter with range and variety who never turns it ober

Lee - his baseline move in Atlanta was a thing of beauty

Frye - just rebound baby

Curry - Oh yeah, did I mention Eddy Curry is only 23?

I'm glad he's working on it in practice but you want to unleash him there in a game? How do you see him performing?

>want to unleash him there in a game?

You damn skippy. What can it hurt? He's hungry and normally fills a few columns of the scoresheet. Of course it wil be painful watching his baby steps but what, really, is there to lose?

>How do you see him performing?

I see him depending on help iin traffic or against backcourt pressure. It will put more responsibility on the forward position but have you noticed even Frye advancing the ball towards halfcourt in space?

Lee can put the ball on the floor and Qyntel is no slouch.

The more I think about it, the more I like it

Marv - if not, why not?

they probably have him working there to challenge him to better develop his ball handling- now I've always thought he had a knack for moving the ball- i.e., attempting to make a good pass- he's just lacked the ability to execute

franco - would you consider that making the entry pass to the post might be easier for a 6'7 dude who can see over the defender as opposed to our resident spark plug, 5'8 Nate?

Reezy has a nice handle form the corner. He puts on a good baseline move to the rim. But that's the only place I've ever seen him handle it well. He's comfortable and confident there. In the open court or in the backcourt he's a disaster with the ball. He looks unnatural with it, stiff, uncertain, just trying to force things with his atleticism.

I'd like to see Nate and Craw split the PG duties if Marbs shuts it down.

I'm fine with your idea of playing Woods at the 2 because I'd like Lee to get a lot of time at the 3. That then frees Frye up more at the 4. Frye can actually play more of a 3's game at the 4 and Lee could play more the 4.

Reezy at the point. Thats interesting as hell!

With the amound of steals he gets, it can only help his transition game.

He can slash and go to the hoop, but points need to be a threat from outside, otherwise teams can just collapse and leave him out there.

But he has great instincts for the ball, can rebound and start a break (these skills can help him thread a pass or finish. IE: make better decisions), can shut down his oppoinent, and does have great hands. He is young enough to convert. Send him to the D league and let him run it there.

Interesting for larry to do this.

Maybe we can make craw the center!

Nalod - you TOO are a gentleman and a hoops scholar. The beautiful thing is that we don't necessarily need to have a guard taking jump shots on a regular basis. Ariza buys the time to work on his shot to the point he's not scared to take it every now and then.

The KEY is he's young enough to convert. He's twenty fer cryin' out loud!

Hey, didn't we just have a guard wear number 21?

C'mon Larry, let Trevor earn his way back into your heart in the backcourt.

this kind of stufff always looks better on paper. Like Marv said Reezy is a nightmare space. He has always been a good passer and last year had several games where he got 4-5 assists in short spurts. He's good at attacking the rim and passing off that if he hits a wall. Running an offense is a different story. I will say one thing we have had problems with is simple entry passes into the post and Trevor can certainly do that.

Earl.. the problem with that line up is I cant see them handling any pressure on the ball.

I'm open to anything.. seeing is believing though, and the last 4-5 years havent given us much to believe in

fishmike - I feel you.. The games are not played on paper.

That "on the ball pressure" thingy bugs me as well. That's a situation where the Knicks forwards must always be alert to come back for the ball.

Perhaps, the issue not so much whether Trevor can handle the responsibility alone. He's never played the position and everyone knows it so the pressure wil be intensified.

Howsineva, if we can compliment him with guys who CAN catch and pass the ball effectively, (Frye and Lee) as well as put it on the floor every now and then (Qyntel, Richardson), perhaps... and it is a BIG perhaps... Trevor can find an adequate groove as a productive stunt man while Marbury heals.

One thing we DO know.... the young man will be a 6'8 defensive hound against the opponents point guard and THAT would be fun to watch.
Ariza's wingspan and footwork would cut down some passing angles, while his yoot and enthusiasm will move the crowd at MSG the first time he soars in for a breakaway dunk after a steal.

What do we have to lose?

Ariza couldn't play small fwd when he was getting PT. Now he is all of a sudden gonna have point guard skills?

If I was the coach I would have him running the point too in an effort to develop Ariza's handle....or lack of one.

Trevor Ariza is a turnover waiting to happen.

exclusive data analysis from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) reveal that Trevor will suck as a PG.

Evidence:
He can't handle the rock under pressure. He dribbles with his head down... He can't go left.

Verdict:
REEZY will suck as a full time PG.

Eny - neither could Doug Christie when he was in New York

> Now he is all of a sudden gonna have point guard skills?

Spree - not by a long shot. But if he;s not botching it in practice ("....man, we talkin' bout practice... not the game.... practice") and he's actually dribbled he ball upcourt a few times in live action, why NOT give him a look at spot duty from the point?

Are we not men?
