ESPN - Multiple Don Nelson associates informed ESPN.com that the 65-year-old has dropped hints about a willingness to take another job after sitting out the rest of this season. A couple of those same associates say it won't happen unless someone out there offers Nelson an annual salary of at least $5 million, but you can be certain someone will.

He's officially a Mavericks consultant these days, but Avery Johnson's Mavs don't consult Nelson for much. This is also the final season on Nelson's multi-year contract which pays him $5 million. His salary drops closer to a more consultant-like $1 million (and change) starting next season, which is why a new gig would shock no one who knows him.

Media types in the Bay Area are already tossing out Nelson's name as an ideal successor to Mike Montgomery in Golden State, given that the Warriors haven't been to the playoffs since Nelson's last full season there in 1993-94. Nelson will also be mentioned as a candidate in Seattle -- barring the re-hiring of the recently promoted Bob Hill -- because of Nelson's longstanding friendship with Sonics general manager Rick Sund.

But Marc Stein is betting on Sacramento.

Nelson remains undeniably close with Warriors vice president Chris Mullin, but that alone isn't enough to legitimize the link. Team sources, for starters, insist that reports of friction between Montgomery and star guard Baron Davis are a media creation. Yet even if the Warriors continue to fade and miss the playoffs for the 12th consecutive season, Nelson can't be considered a serious contender to take over in Oaktown unless his relationship with Warriors owner Chris Cohan is mended. Don't forget that Cohan's messy 1995 parting with Nelson was not wrapped up until 1999, when an NBA arbirtator ruled that Nelson could keep $1.6 million that Cohan expected him to repay after Nelson was hired to coach the Knicks.

Fire Brown and bring Nellie back. The guy is a genius when it comes to using what he has to win basketball games. Fire everyone of Browns guys and Bring Nellie in!!!!

They fired Nellie then kept using Mason as a point forward. Mason went on to be the point forward in Charlotte and with the Bucks, lol.

Nellie even tried to use Brad Lohas three point shooting ability. That's balls and showed that he trusted what his players could do.

Too bad Ewing couldn't stand to work off the ball......they were having a good year if not for the bickering. If they would have shut up and went along with it who knows what deals and stuff would have went down.

Yo man whatever.......I'd definately take Nellie in the Knicks current situation than Brown.

Oh my god. People want Nellie over Larry Brown.
Sidenote: Only in New York would the fans want Larry Brown out and the return of Don Nelson who left this team high and dry at 34-25 in 1996.

Figures.

JVG and Pat Riley left us high and dry.....Nellie was fired cuz the players didn't want to change the system.

It's interesting to debate this subject to me because Larry Brown is a good coach but....he is stubborn as a mule and will not adapt his "system" for nothing at all. "Play the right way DAMN YOU!!!!!" and all that BS.

Nellie has been know to be the most creative coach in the history of the game. Rick Adelman is another guy that comes to mind as being creative. The Suns coach is another one that is crazy creative with the his schemes. Knicks don't need a Bobby Knight they need a guy that will be creative enough to figure how to utilize all the strengths of his players....I think Nellie is that guy.

I even think Flip Sanders would have been better suited for this team......and shut the F up about the Pistons cuz I know someone is gonna be a dick head and say something about that. Marbury said that Flip was great to play for cuz of his creativity and willingness to let the guys play.

With Brown there doesn't seem like there will ever be any change in the garden.....it's getting worse. The players are tuning him out. The best course of action should be to fire Brown and try to get a guy that fits the situation. Brown clowns his own team in the media harder than Mike and the Mad Dog. What is Isiah supposed to do? Trade everyone? For who? Who would satisfy Browns tastes? Even if Isiah was to be fired the players are still here......the only way it will work is if Brown was the GM and coach......no way do I want this guy with that much power around here.

Brown has got to get fired. No way do we trade any of this youth to satisfy Brown. Fire Brown and cut your loses. Get a coach in here that is willing to adapt his "system" to the players he has.

ITs very rare that any franchise can bring in someone who can push the modern player around.
Larry with his cred, and his 40 million dollar contract has that kind of clout.

Call it stubbern, out of date, what ever. He got Hand. Isiah cannot go behind his back on bit.

This Group needs this kind of leadership.

And they can revolt all they want!

Nellie? Please.

Want to resurect and think it all can be great? Think Riles. No instant gradification there. While it can all change, I think the heat are not championship quality.

Don Nelson is oe of my favorite coaches/GM's.

After the Knicks axed Nellie while he was 9 games over 5 hundred, he went over to Dallas as GM and coach.

All he did was draft Nowitzki, and pick up Nash and Finley, making the Mavericks relevant again.

Now the Mavericks are one the premiere franchises in the league, mainly because of Nowitzki.

I believe he drafted Hardaway, Sprewell, and Webber. Possibly Mullin too. Check out this quote:

From 1989-92, without a pick higher than 11th overall, Nelson chose four future all-stars (Hardaway, Hill, Gatling and Sprewell). Out of eight overall first-round picks from 1988 through 1993, the Warriors selected six future all-stars (Richmond, Tim Hardaway, Hill, Gatling, Sprewell and Anfernee Hardaway).

Nelson: 27 seasons coaching in the NBA, 19 of them over .500.

Nelson was also a pretty good player, owner of a shot just like Houson's versus Miami.

Don Nelson is nobody's chopped Liver.

I like nellie, but he didn't draft dirk, I think the Bucks did and Dallas drafted Robert Tractor Traylor and they traded picks.

He also ruined his relationship with a then young chris webber, who was later traded from GS...

Nellie is a good basketball man, not chopped liver but neither is he filet mignon....

When the player is traded for during the draft, that means there was a deal in place...to me that is just like drafting him.

He also ruined his relationship with a then young chris webber, who was later traded from GS...

He isn't perfect.

Nellie is a good basketball man, not chopped liver but neither is he filet mignon....

I disagree. Nellie is one of the best coaches/GM's in NBA history. I for one, put him in the Filet Mignon category. Check this out, not too shabby:

Maybe Zeke & Dolan can convince LB to state to the public that he needs to retire effective IMMEDIATELY due to his poor health but pay him a lump sum of 20 mil in cash to expidite the move !!
Isiah Thomas will lead us back to the playoffs in 2006 !!!

Nellie would have a hell of a lot of fun with this roster. This team could easily score 120pts a night and play slightly over .500. It would never lead to a championship, but it would a lot of fun.

You're right, at least the team would be interesting to watch.

Anyway, ain't nobody going to the finals with this bunch. Any of them might be on a finals team, but not all together.
