We cant get under the cap. Look at Hoopshype http://www.hoopshype.com/salaries/new_york.htm. In 06/07, it has us at 49mill, and it doesnt include Curry's contract for some reason. Thats about 57mill tied up in 5 contracts (it doesnt include team options on Frye, Lee Nate and JYD) Marbury, Crawford, Curry, Malik, JJ and QRich. Getting under the cap is an impossibility. Now, before anyone gets started, this is not an Isiah bashing thread, there are enough of those so don't bring it here. We have who we have, finished.
So,
Marbury - certainly an asset, making a lot, but provides something for it.
JJ - At this point is there to balance the bench so Curry doesnt make it tip over on the other end.
Crawford - not a complete player by any means, but if he gets more consistant, could be the future.
Q-Rich - Has lost something, doesn't know where it is, and will keep shooting until he finds it.
Curry - the future of this francise. If he turns into a 20/10 Shaq-like player, we will be set at the C and everyone will want him. If he doesnt, then we are screwed.
So cap room is not an option for the NKY. Where do we go from here?
Options.
1. Use expiring contracts every single year. Possibilities this year we have Jalen Rose, Jason Richardson, Al Harrington, Antoine Walker, Bobby Simmons, KVH, Stro, K-Mart, Ratliff/Patterson, Boozer and Maggette. Next year we have another 10 mill to look for more candidates.
Not a very inspiring bunch I know.
2. Wait and see how the youngsters turn out.
Scenario A.
Marbury - just Marbury
Crawford - Still inconsistant, scores 30 one game then goes 3-21 the next.
Q-Rich - Still looking, can't find it, shooting below 30%.
Frye - Never manages to stay in the paint. Averages 15/7 mainly off of pick and rolls.
Curry - Averages more offensive fouls then assists per game. 16/6.
Bench
David Lee - Averages 5 rpg off the bench with no offense
Nate - 10 ppg and 3 assists, too hyper to get better.
JJ - 420 pounds, averages 1 bpg and 7 fouls per game
Q-Woods - Never made the most of his potential, plays well every 5 games to average 8 ppg and 3 rpg.
Ariza - Cant shoot, energy off the bench.
Scenario B.
Marbury - just Marbury
Crawford - Found consistancy, gets his teammates involved, averages 20ppg and 5 assists.
Q-Rich - Back is better, 15/6 with 38% 3 shooting.
Frye - Most Improved player 2 years running. Weak-side defense hugely improved, now averages 1.8 bpg. Plays the high post and steps out for the pretty 15 footer. Stays in the paint for rebounds, thereby averaging 9 rpg. Best player on the team, averages 20 shots per game.
Curry - Figured out how to stay in the game, and stay under 275. 18/9.
Bench
David Lee - Automatic corner J, 8 rpg off the bench.
Nate - Comparisons to D-Wade, as he is unstoppable driving past his man, and shooting the 3. Beats out Crawford for the starting job.
JJ - 320 pounds. Averages 2 bpg and 7 fouls per game
Q-Woods - sixth man candidate. highly effective off the bench 12/8
Ariza - Improved jumper, still highlight material every night. 10/7 off the bench.
Now any of this might or might not happen. It's a lot of improvement in a lot of different players to be hanging your francise on.
So, people of uk.com. Where is the light? Starphuck? Build from within? Give up? Wait till 2009 and some cap room?
Just a reminder. I don't want to talk about the past in this thread! No reminiscing on previous mistakes. No Layden/Dolan/Isiah bashing here. Just the future please.
If you were GM, what path would you take?

Some men see things as they are and ask why. I dream things that never were and ask why not?
