The NBA announced today that Chris Andersen of the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets has been dismissed and disqualified from the league for violating the terms of the Anti-Drug Program agreed to by the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association.

A veteran player such as Andersen who is dismissed from the league under the Anti-Drug Program cannot apply for reinstatement for at least two years.

The NBA, NBA teams, and the Players Association are prohibited from publicly disclosing information regarding the testing or treatment of any NBA player under the Anti-Drug Program, other than to announce a player's suspension or dismissal from the league.

I think the drug testing guy just looked at his pic and decided he was guilty.

Surprising. The league doesn't crack down on drugees too often.

Wow, never seen anything like that before. At least we won't have to see him in the Dunk contest anymore.

So let me get this straight... charge into the stands and attack a fan, get suspended less than a season. Put chemicals into your own body, of your own free will, get suspended two seasons. Sounds fair. The NBA definitely has its priorities straight.

As far as I know the NBA does not draw a distinction between hard and soft drugs.

oohah

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

i remember reading somewhere that it does but i cant find it right now but I could find this from nba.com

"The penalties for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs will be increased from suspensions of 5, 10, and 25 games for the first, second and any subsequent violation, respectively, to 10 and 25 game suspensions for the first two violations, a one-year suspension for the third violation and disqualification from the league for a fourth violation. Penalties for testing positive for marijuana will be increased from a $15,000 fine for a second violation to a $25,000 fine and, for each subsequent violation, incremental 5 game suspensions. The first violation of the marijuana program will continue to result in the player being placed in a counseling program, with no financial penalties.

The list of performance-enhancing drugs has been substantially broadened. Players will be tested for these"

the only way he would get disqualified for two years is if whatever he was caught doing was more sever than the above mentioned things unless he was cuaght three times before which to my knowledge he hasnt.

"The new agreement calls for banning players who test positive for cocaine,
heroin, amphetamines or LSD, but not for marijuana. Although offenders
could face escalating fines and suspensions, they will never be kicked out
of the league for marijuana use, no matter how many times they test positive."

Such dismissal and disqualification shall be mandatory and may not be rescinded or reduced by the player’s Team or the NBA.

(b) In addition to any other provision of this Agreement requiring that a player be dismissed and disqualified from any association with the NBA or any of its Teams in accordance with the provisions of Section 11(a) above, a player will also be dismissed and disqualified under Section 11(a) above if he is convicted of (including a plea of guilty, no contest, or nolo contendere to) a crime involving the use or possession of a Prohibited Substance other than marijuana.
