ARTEST TRADED?

Updated 3:40 EST

Jan 12 -- The Indiana Pacers have reportedly traded Ron Artest to the Los Angeles Clippers for swingman Corey Maggette.

WISH-TV out of Indianapolis confirmed reports coming out of Atlanta that a Pacers-Clippers deal is in the works and nearly finalized.

The original report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said sources from within the Pacers organization informed Al Harrington on Wednesday that the Pacers were close to a deal that would send Artest to the Los Angeles Clippers for forward Corey Maggette.

"Any team with a sane Ron Artest is going to be tough to deal with," Harrington told the Atlanta newspaper. "Any team he's on with his mind right is going to the playoffs and is going to make some noise. So it'll be good for Ron and for the Clippers."

Maggette was averaging over 21 points per game when he was sidelined with a torn ligament in his left foot. He is expected to be out another six weeks according to the Orange County Register.

According to sources, the trade is reliant on two factors:

One factor is that the Clippers would like to sit down with Ron Artest to discuss his willingness to play in Los Angeles. The other, on Indiana's end, concerns Maggette's health.

Magette could miss the entire season if surgury is needed.

Artest on the other hand, told reporters he needs a month to get back into "basketball shape." The former Pacer hasn't appeared in a game since Dec. 6.

More details on the trade when available.

that's a pretty good deal for indiana considering how long they have waited to trade him and how low his trade value was compared to his talent level.

yeah, I think maggette is more of a natural SF because of his size. Jackson is more of a shooter and maggette slashes a lot more and goes to the line a ton.

There interchangable like Craw and Marb. Mag and Jack can play the 2 and 3 respectively. This hurts because I always wanted Magg to come t the knicks

That's great value for Indiana considering that we thought Artests' value was shot. They're getting a very good player. They need to sit Magette as long as he needs to sit and do surgery if necessary. They need to think long-term.

trade is on hold:

Artest for Maggette swap on hold

Jan 12 -- The Indiana Pacers have taken trade discussions with the Los Angeles Clippers past the initial phase of interest, but have yet to come to a deal.

Despite reports of an agreement between the Pacers and Clippers being reached that would swap Ron Artest for Corey Maggette, Pacers CEO and President Donnie Walsh told the team's official website, "We don't have a deal for Maggette."

According to reports the two sides were close to an agreement, but the status of Maggette's leg injury is not sitting well with the already injury-riddled Pacers.

Maggette, who is averaging over 21 points and 5.5 rebounds through 13 games this season, has been out for over a month with a torn ligament in his left foot. He's expected to miss several more weeks.

Out west, the Clippers have yet to sit down and talk with Artest- something they reportedly would like to do before any deal is finalized.

Artest told reporters he needs a month to get back into "basketball shape." The former Pacer hasn't appeared in a game since Dec. 6.

Proposed Artest-for-Maggette swap won't happenBy Marc Stein
ESPN.com

The much-discussed trade that would send wayward forward Ron Artest from Indiana to Los Angeles for Clippers swingman Corey Maggette, believed to be on the verge of completion this week, has fizzled.

Maggette

Artest

NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com on Thursday that the Pacers have abandoned their interest in Maggette because of concerns with his troublesome left foot.

The Clippers, sources said, will have to wait up to a month for the removal of Maggette's cast to determine if the 26-year-old can be reactivated or if an ongoing tendon problem will require season-ending surgery. Indiana, as a result, has elected not to pursue the deal, even though Maggette -- a rugged scorer known for getting to the free-throw line --- had been near the top of its wish list since the Pacers decided last month that they would honor Artest's public request to be traded.

ESPN.com reported Wednesday that the Golden State Warriors, along with the Clippers, were the frontrunners in the Artest sweepstakes, which will soon stretch into a sixth week. The latest Maggette development theoretically enhances Golden State's chances, but the Pacers covet power forward Ike Diogu and the Warriors considered the burly rookie an untouchable.

I hear on Sporting News that it is Artest that is keeping teams away. Another reason why the Pacers are really anger with him. I hear so much about this story while in Indiana I am stick of the whole affair. Artest is trying to force the Pacers to trade him to NY. Both Isiah and Brown don't want anything to do with the guy. It hurts to see this guy suffer, I actually had the opportunity to get to know him and he isn't such a bad guy but he opens his mouth and ridculous stuff comes out. Oh well as Nas would say "Queensbridge forever".

If the Clippers are willing to trade Maggette, Indiana should jump at the deal. Talent wise, I think Maggette is as good as they're going to get. Let Artest be the Clippers' headache.

Zeke coached him and knows him. If he doesn't want him, there must be good reason for that. But damn tho, it still hurts/

If it is Ron-Ron that is keeping teams away then the Knicks might have a shot at him. I love how the team is playing lately but I don't know, I think it'd be hard to turn down having Artest on this team, just look how low his value is, Artest for Maggette straight up?! Obviously Artests baggage makes this kind of deal possible which leads me to believe that if Ron-Ron wants the Knicks then the Knicks can trade a package of the young'ins sans Curry and Frye and quite possibly even Lee. I'd trade Nate OR Ariza and Q for Artest. We could still bring Craw off the bench. I think thats a trade you have to make, the Knicks current winning streak would get THAT much better and a top Eastern team would be that much more realistic. The point I'm trying to make is that we wouldn't be giving up alot for Artest and even if it backfires in our face all we gave up is a washed up Q and either Ariza or Nate and thats backfiring worst case scenario becuase if Artest plays, he's going to be good.

After saying all that, I can at the same time say I wouldn't want to do a deal like this becuase I'd rather just keep the team and see waht they can do and see what they can accomplish.

Something to think about I think.

LOL Nah yo but after KRS dissed Marly and Shan, Marly l came back with new acts (Kane, Master Ace, Kool G. Rap, Biz etc) aka the Juice Crew (including Shante). Then Nas came through a few years later and then Mobb Deep. So you can't front....the Bridge is still legit. Ron Ron represents! lol

Good for him though. Hope things work out for dude. I sure wish we had him here though I can't lie. lol

Artest needs a month to get back into basketball shape? That speaks poorly about his committment to basketball. He's not injured. He has no reason to be one month out of shape. I wouldn't give up a good player like Magette for him unless the doctors think his ankle will never be healed.
