James, Nash Named NBA Players of the Week

NEW YORK, Jan. 9, 2006 – The Toronto Raptors’ Mike James and the Phoenix Suns’ Steve Nash today were named the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Monday, Jan. 2 through Sunday, Jan. 8.

James led the Raptors to a 3-1 week, averaging 25.3 points on .547 shooting from the floor and .619 from three-point range, 7.0 assists and 4.5 rebounds. James eclipsed his season averages for the week by 9.9 points, 2.5 assists and 1.4 rebounds, while leading the Raptors in assists in all four contests and in scoring twice.

Nash averaged a league-high 14.3 assists, while scoring 21.3 ppg on .533 shooting and grabbing 3.8 rpg, to lead the Suns to a 3-1 week. Nash not only set a career high with 22 assists in a triple-overtime loss at New York on Jan. 2, but it was the franchise’s second-highest assist total ever, trailing only Kevin Johnson’s club record of 25 on April 6, 1994 and the most in the NBA since Cleveland’s Andre Miller dished out 22 on Dec. 15, 2001.

Here is a closer look at the week for James and Nash:

Mike James, Toronto Raptors
Jan. 3 @ Atlanta: Tallied a team-high 28 points, while adding six assists and two rebounds in a 108-97 road win over the Hawks.
Jan. 4 vs. Orlando: Had 17 points, seven assists and two steals in a 121-97 win over the Magic.
Jan. 6 vs. Houston: Scored a team-high 30 points on 10-of-17 shooting, while adding eight assists and seven rebounds in a 112-92 win over the visiting Rockets.
Jan 8 vs. New Jersey: Posted 26 points, seven assists, seven rebounds and two steals in a 105-104 loss to the Nets.

Steve Nash, Phoenix Suns
Jan. 2 @ New York: Posted an NBA season-high 22 assists, while adding 28 points and five rebounds in a 140-133 triple-overtime loss to the Knicks.
Jan. 4 vs. Philadelphia: Recorded 24 points on 11-of-16 shooting, six assists and four rebounds in a 105-85 victory over the Sixers.
Jan. 6 vs. Miami: Had 11 points, 19 assists and three rebounds in a 111-93 win over the Heat.
Jan. 7 vs. San Antonio: Posted a double-double of 22 points and 10 assists in a 91-86 win over the visiting Spurs.

Other nominees for Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week were Cleveland’s LeBron James, Denver’s Carmelo Anthony, Detroit’s Chauncey Billups, Indiana’s Stephen Jackson, Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant, New Jersey’s Vince Carter, New Orleans/Oklahoma City’s David West and Philadelphia’s Samuel Dalembert.

James' 25 and 7 with a 3-1 record is somehow better than Marbury's 23 and 12 with a 4-0 record? Makes no sense

Just to refresh your memories.
Stephon Marbury
23.5 Points
12 assists
2.25 steals
45% from the field.
77% from the line.

James could be viewed as more impressive because the raptors suck and are not expected to win many. Not to mention Mike James is an unknown role player who is playing out of his mind.

Steph wasn't even mentioned though, thats pretty remarkable. Look at those stats.

Player of the week is not a big deal. he just has to keep doing what he's doing which is racking up assists, giving guys the ball at the right time and scoring when we need him to. If he does out there, dominates possessions and tries to score over 30 eveny night we won't win

when i mean fired up, i mean playing well in terms of playin within the team and just being a floor general out there.

If im not mistaken last year they gave marbs player of the week after we were 16-13, and thats when marbs declared himself the best PG in the league...si im happy in the sense he didnt get the accolade as now he can just concentrate on the team and not make any other claim, hopefully 06 is better than 05 in terms of wins

Marbury should be the player of the week especially when you take a look at the job he's doing at the point. He only had like 1 turnover in the past couple games combined right?

And he's getting all these assists even though he doesn't even have one 15 point per game scorer to pass the ball to.

He has Frye and he's basically right on 15 I think and Eddie has been scoring at will lately, but that's beyond the point. I can take them giving James player of the week, just b/c of the reason killa mentioned. He's a role player playing like a star. That impresses people. I can live with that. But for Marbury to not get mentioned is dumb. With that being said, why are we even argueing about this, when I'm sure we never ever argued the number of times Ewing or Houston or Sprewell could have or should have had it. It's really not that big a deal. Lets see Stephon win it for this week.
