You're absolutely right. This is a legitimate, undeniable strength of Thomas, which makes it even more maddening that he would trade his next two No. 1 picks to get the same player he already had in Sweetney. I presume you're writing this in reference to Lee's big game against Phoenix -- it's puzzled me that he hadn't been in the rotation sooner instead of all the veteran dead wood Brown keeps trotting out there.
I'm sorry, but this is patently ridiculous. For one thing, Chicago has been steadily reducing Sweetney's minutes, bringing him off the bench and actually benched him against the Suns.
Meanwhile, Curry dominates the Suns it OT and is a big part of the win.
Aside from recent trends, this comparison strikes me as absurd. Curry is huge. He's definitely 6'10" at least and has tremendous lift and quickness and hands for a big man. He is almost unguardable with single coverage. Basically, if you can't draw a charge on him in the paint, he's scoring on you.
Sweetney's main offense in the post is to hope to get fouled.
Their points and rebounds per 40 minutes are close this year, but Curry has a sizable advantage in PER (18.4 to 15.5) and he's just a much tougher cover.
Also, I think it's telling that Chicago is in it's worst stretch of the season and the way they've decided to come out of it is to bench Sweetney.
Sorry, it just pissed me off that Hollinger would say something so blatantly false.
