Sonics Waive Mateen Cleaves
4th January, 2006 - 1:43 pm

Press Release - The Seattle SuperSonics today waived guard Mateen Cleaves, Sonics General Manager Rick Sund announced.

A 6-2 guard out of Michigan State, Cleaves averaged 4.1 points, 1.9 assists and 10.7 minutes per game in 19 appearances for the Sonics this season.

Cleaves, a five-year veteran, has averaged 3.8 ppg, 1.9 apg and 1.1 rpg in 159 NBA career games. He was originally drafted by the Detroit Pistons in the first round (14th pick overall) of the 2000 NBA Draft. [READ]

houston reduced their roster to 14 as well... teams seem to be shedding players in anticipation of moves.

it could be a question of when contracts become guaranteed
i think q2's becomes guaranteed either january 4th or the 10th
so maybe they're waiving guys b/c of that

I guess this has no bearing on the Knicks since if Seattle knew that the Knicks and LB were interested in bringing Cleeves in they wouldn't have released him.

DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

AP - The Houston Rockets waived rookie guard John Lucas III and forward Josh Davis on Wednesday, less than a week after signing them.

The 5-foot-11 Lucas, son of former Rocket John Lucas Jr., played a total of 15 minutes in Houston's last two games. He had 2 points, two rebounds and three assists.

The 6-8 Davis appeared briefly in the Rockets' 94-89 loss to Golden State on Saturday and did not play in Tuesday's 123-111 win at Washington. [READ]

Don't think this means anything. Teams could have waived the players immediatly prior to a trade. No need to do it a day in advance.

even if they are doing it for a trade, I doubt it's a trade that involves us in any way. hmm, I wonder if we could buy someone out and sign john lucas.

These players are being waived because their contracts become guaranteed January 10th. It might have something to do with trades, but more likely it is teams saving a few bucks.
