A lot of us know this already, but it appears the papers are beginning to see the light as well as brown...
The NYTimes: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/31/sports/basketball/31knicks.html and below: http://www.nynewsday.com/sports/basketball/knicks/ny-spstephon1231,0,616732,print.story?coll=nyc-sports-headlines Stephon not to blame BY GREG LOGAN STAFF CORRESPONDENT December 31, 2005 MILWAUKEE -- Larry Brown may have called out Stephon Marbury for his disappearing act in a loss in Orlando on Wednesday, but he's not trying to pin the blame for the Knicks' 7-20 record on his point guard. The Knicks' Hall of Fame coach took most of that responsibility Friday. "We're not losing games because of him," Brown said. "We're losing games because of me and our team." Brown said the Knicks "can't win games with him taking seven shots," as Marbury did while making no field goals and scoring only five points against the Magic. But the coach said his criticism doesn't mean he'd like to see Marbury traded. "I don't think you guys ever heard me say I wasn't pleased with the way he's playing until the last game," Brown said after the morning shootaround before the Knicks played the Bucks Friday night at Bradley Center. "I've never, ever said anything except I was pleased with the way he's playing, the way he's trying, and I thought he has been making great progress ... We've played twenty-some games. I don't expect this to happen overnight." Benching Marbury as a means of sending a message is something Brown never considered. "I'd have trouble coming up with a starting team some games," Brown said. "Where are you going to get your offense?" In recent games, Brown's starting lineups have been questionable because Marbury has been virtually the only offensive threat on the floor at the start, with Eddy Curry, Jamal Crawford and Channing Frye coming off the bench and starter Quentin Richardson shooting poorly. Marbury studiously has avoided criticizing any of Brown's decisions, but he acknowledged the obvious, saying, "It always helps when you've got guys that can score 15, 20 points a night ." As of Friday, coach and point guard still hadn't sat down to talk out whatever differences they might have. Marbury said he has no issues with Brown but that if the coach has a problem with him, he'd like to hear about it directly. "If I feel like there's something, I'm going to come to you, and I'm going to say something because that's what I feel like you're supposed to do," Marbury said. Marbury went out of his way Thursday to express his desire to remain in New York, but lately, he hasn't looked excited about playing for Brown. The coach said he's talked to Marbury in the past about the importance of showing a more positive demeanor. "When things are going bad, we've got to have him with good body language," Brown said. "He's your leader, arguably your best player. We've got a young team. They look up to somebody like him. If he doesn't show positive vibes these guys, it's not going to help them. But he always tells me, 'No, Coach, I'm involved. I'm not getting down.' "But sometimes I think you've just got to show them that. Again, that's not his nature, but it would be helpful." all kool aid all the time.
