I just saw in the Star Ledger Sports, heres a link to the online version of you care to see the small blurb.
http://www.nj.com/knicks/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/1135239804310800.xml&coll=1

Forbes magazine valued the Knicks at $584 million, the highest in the NBA.

While Jim Dolan is the owner of the Knicks, I don't think they will ever be a championship calibur team. Through all the Knicks losing the past years, the Knicks have managed to stay one of, if not the most profitable franchise in the NBA. While us Knicks fans hope and pray for playoff appearances and a run at the Finals, Jim Dolan hopes and prays for a player like Stephon Marbury to come along. A guy that is from New York, a native son, someone with whom alot of casual Knicks fans will be able to identify as their own. This puts $$$ in Dolans eyes becuase the ticket prices stay up and the merchandising goes through the roof with jersey sales etc etc because the fans want to see Marbury and the team was never bad enough where fans can't go watch games, the Knicks always won 35-40 games, just good enough. I don't blame the Knicks woes on Marbury, I blame them on Dolan wanting a guy like him to keep the fans coming instead of placing winning ahead of making money or atleast putting them on the same par.

Jim Dolan has ruined this once proud franchise by himself and it only took him 8 years.

If your theory is correct wouldn't you blame the fans for falling for it?

You can't really blame fans for falling it. I think 99% of Knick fans are ecstatic when a player like Stephon Marbury comes because they feel he can turn the team around, he has enough star power to do that. I'm sure Dolan saw Marbury as a good player but also a star who is born and raised in NYC which is CHACHING to him. Dolan is a shrewd shrewd businessman, he knows exactly what he's doing.

He is shrewd and we are all falling for it. If we didn't buy the tickets or the Jersey's he would be forced to change.

Marbury did make a splash when he came back home. Now that the hype around Marbury is gone and we keep losing and people stop buying Marbury jerseys and he keeps getting booed, he'll be traded otherwise Dolan is going to start losing money and he does not like that.

And the new savior will be brought in. We will cheer him and when he doesn't turn us around on his own we will boo him and the cycle will continue. When will we learn?

The cycle will never stop. NY fans need something to complain about and thats for damn certain.

I can see it now.....

The Knicks acquire Tim Duncan.

10 games into the season. Tim Duncan cost a game with his free-throw shooting! This guy has some serious problems with his free-throw shooting and he better work on them soon, I mean we're 5-5!

it's not like we're the only fans who don't appreciate Marbury. Ask Minnesota, Jersey, Phoenix fans what they think about him

Like Bip said in another post. We ran Ewing out of town, we gave Houston holy-hell becuase of a contract offered to him, and now we're running Marbury out of town because he didnt turn the franchise around all byhimself... when does it end?

Well who would have thought people would get on Larry Browns coaching? Trust me, people would find a way to get on Duncan

but the thing with H20 and Marbury is different than with Ewing. Ewing made a ton of money but took the Knicks to the playoffs every year. H20 was in street clothes collecting $100mm and Marbury is getting all that money and can never even get his team to .500

This is "Starphuching". We have been doing it for years. Dice, Marbs, and we starphuched ourselves into keeping Ewing instead of moving him when he became unreasonable. Its fear of revenue.

Its a business. Does the value include the value of MSG? Just curious. Charlotte panthers are very high value cuz they own their own stadium.

Back to kNicks, "starphuching" started when we bought in drugged up over the hill Spencer Haywood, traded for Bob McAdoo, and signed Marvin Webster. We failed in 1976 when Dr. J was offered to us in lieu of the $6millin dollar payemnt the nets owed knicks when they came into the league. Lame James is very similar to Marvin "the human eraser" Webster!

Marbury was another starphuch. Yes, I believe this is Dolans doing.

Maybe Layden was fired as he did not want to do it any more? Who the hell knows! The truth can be very strange.

In NY we always need a target. We always need someone to blame. Normally it's our best player or coach. We make them the scapegoat. Meanwhile every other underperforming slug on the roster gets a pass as we boo our star. Why would they step it up, it's not their fault, it's the star.

One day we will realize that it's the whole ship that is messed up. It's not Marbury. It wasn't Ewing. It's the philosophy behind how we are run by ownership, reported by the media and rooted for by fans. We create this atmosphere and don't realize. all the while our management laughs on the way to the bank.

There is a reason why the Yankees have won for decades and the Mets normally struggle to get out of their own way. There is a reason why players beg to play for the Yankees and except for a few random seasons shy away from the Mets. It's called atmosphere. The atmosphere in NY is conducive to being also-rans for another 30 years. Ownership, management, coach's, players, the media AND FANS are all to blame. Patience is the only way this is getting turned around. It isn't one person's fault.

well said Bip. it starts at the top, but acquiring players that nobody wants, who make $20mm a year no matter how you look at it hurts your chances of building a winning team because it puts you in caphell, with no wins to show for it. Even if Ewing was making $20mm there would be teams lining up to sign him for the chance to win a championship.
