HOT ANTONIO LOSES COOL

By BRIAN LEWIS

December 22, 2005 -- It was painfully obvious and sadly ironic. Antonio Davis — who initially refused to report to the Knicks after being traded and begged for a buyout — has come to care about this team as much or more than any player on the roster. It showed last night, as his frustration boiled over.

Fuming in the midst of the Knicks' 109-96 loss to San Antonio at the Garden, frustrated by their NBA-worst seven-game losing streak and apathetic defense on Tony Parker, Davis took matters into his own hands by laying a hard foul on the Spurs guard and getting into a shoving match with MVP Tim Duncan.

With the Knicks trailing 67-45 3:42 into the second half, Parker drove the lane for what appeared to be yet another layup. Davis closed him down and gave him an elbow; short on malice but long on message.

"I'm frustrated, that's all. If they don't understand that, sorry. I wasn't trying to hurt the guy," said Davis, vexed at seeing Parker driving the lane again.

Parker had 10 assists, most on drive-and-kicks; he also took seven free throws, and made five layups of his seven baskets.

"That's what it really was, I got tired of seeing it. Every time I turned around this guy was in the paint. It's bad enough I'm trying to deal with Tim Duncan. Then I just . . . snapped. I saw him coming, I just went to stop him and I went to his body. If I'm trying to hurt a guy, I know how. I just wanted to stop him from coming into the paint, that's all."

After the foul, three Spurs surrounded him and Duncan started jawing at him. Davis pushed him away, and fouled him :30 later, his fourth foul in a 1:27 span. He purposely walked over and brushed against Duncan's shoulder after that foul got called, and was lifted.

"Tim's a basketball player, an offensive threat. Let him do that; leave all that other stuff to guys like me," Davis said wryly. "I'm just trying to lead by example. I really care about this team, the situation we're in, what we're going through.

"If I can get out there and show effort every time up and down the court, hopefully it'll rub off on the next guy."

This from a guy who became a Knick 2 months ago... I like it. But where the f**k are the others? Marbury & Craw needs to show that they got balls & pride like AD.

This is just a perfect example of how this team has a bunch of pu@ssies on it. I'v been saying it for years it seems now, you can't win with a bunch of fags who just have fancy crossovers, talk alot of smakc, but are punks and never really stand up to you once you get in there face.

And yes, I'm talkinb about Marbury and Craw specifically. For all of his macho posing, Marbury has never stood to anything or anybody on the court. And Craw doesnt even try to look like he has got any balls.

So you get what you get, a gutless team ready to bend over and ask for more every night on the floor.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

AD is a Man.

I repeat myself: he is not the reason for our losing.

His steal on duncan last nite was an example of his hustle. He is not the player he was 5-6 years ago, but at 37 has bigger balls than anyone else.

Marbury does not seem to be working very hard on defense. Crawford is a *****. Nate is too small. Qich is too slow at the 2.

Craw, and Marbury come from the same And1 school of no D. Instead of getting angry when your man scores on you and shutting him down, you just let him score and then try to get back at him on the offensive end. There are literally 100's of NBA players whose games have been ruined by this line of thinking.

MJ would score 50 and hold his guy to one and then walk off the court without a word because he knew he ripped out their heart.

These guys score 25, give up 23, lose the game by 16 and think they showed their man up because of a sick crossover that will be on sportscenter later than night.

Bip, you are exactly right on the try to outscore without D your opponent mentality. I saw Parker get to the rim a couple of times and you could predict without a shadow of a doubt that the only thing Marbury was going to do was take the ball himself to the rim, regardless of what was good for his team.

I recall marbs best moment was going toe to toe with Kobe a few years back when Marb was a Net in the allstar game! It was a fun shooters game!

His best moment was when he signed his current contract.

I may be in the minority(translation:the only one who thinks this) but I believe that if you took Marbury and put him on a team with a coach he respects and a team that has a winning atmosphere around it, he would change instantly. I think in NY we are asking him to do something he is incapable of doing(lead a team) and we are hating him for not being able to do it.

If Marbury can't respect Larry Brown, who will he respect?

Remember when he was loved for giving money to Katrina and bought his rookies suits? Where is the shallow love now?

Marbs is being reeducated. 23 games is not enough time. Im patient!

I agree 100%. That's what I mentioned in another thread. He needs a winning atmosphere and he'd return to the star he was in 2003.

I've been patient with him, but he looses his man out there on the floor- he is either confused, clueless or could care less. I think having played 23 games, if he is uncertain of what to do, he is either dumber than a log or doesn't care. I'm thinking he has $70m reasons not to be interested.

Everybody on the team does this. All of them!!!

I think Marbs does respect LB. I think he is frustrated because the media and fans have turned on him and add that to him being a surly guy anyway and we may be hastening his departure unnessarily. The guy needs a winning atmosphere and we don't seem to be able to provide it.

I personally understand exactly what LB is doing playing the vets. I would do it too, but to save Marbs he may have to start playing all the young guys just so maybe fans can exhale a little bit, enjoy the games and get off Marb's back.

I think we all need to get it in our heads. Marbs is not a leader. He is a good player that is not a leader. Stop expecting him to be and stop hating him for not being this. It is up to management and the coach's and most importantly THE PLAYERS to develop a new one.

Frye is a rookie, but there is no reason he can't become a leader on this young team. Or Crawford. Or Curry. Somebody get some cajones and step up. And don't give me nonsense about Marbs holding them back because a true leader will step up no matter who is on his team. It ain't Marbs, it's everyone.

Yes, the whole team is bad- but Marbury is a 10 year vet- he should know better- and he is paid to be the best player on the team.

If Frye or Lee or Ariza or Nate make a stupid play, fine, they're young.

If its AD or Malik or Mo with a stupid turnover, they're no part of the core.

And if he is upset with the media, and the pressure. Quit. Retire. Go away, you don't deserve to be an NBA player.
