Is this really what NY needs? All the press seems to suggest that the guy is not strong on interior defense, and in 4 years in the league has never averaged double figures in scoring and offers at best 6-7 rebounds per game. Is this all we want from a center that we're committing 36M to over 6 years? We're just compunding our cap problems.
I think NY would be far better off working a trade with Philly for DC. DC is in his last contract year and has to perform well this year. If he doesn't perform, NY frees up $8M in cap space next year.
Talent wise, DC continues to be a big body that can hang with any Center in the East. At 6'10" and 260 lbs, he's not going to get pushed around much. While he is not a great shot blocker, he can rebound with the best and as a wide body, can block the lane.
Philly may do this deal, in exchange for help at the PG (Ward) and Spoon, who is the type of player Larry Brown loves. And given Iverson's current legal problems, Philly better start thinking about diversifying its scoring load. Spoon can get Philly 15 points per game if in the starting rotation.
