all we can talk about is giving up the pick. we have no idea where it will be or what will happen. if curry can no longer play b/c of his heart or he turns out to be nothing more than he is right now, maybe giving up an unprotected #1 wasn't that bright an idea. but if curry turns into a monster than who gives a f ck.
right now, all we know is we gave up the pick and i don't think it can be fully assessed on what we actually gave up until a few years down the road.
it's just another high risk acquisition by isiah. some don't like taking these type of risks, some don't mind it.
all i know is that if we don't make the playoffs, and we end up getting the #1 pick and have to give it to chicago, isiah, like others have mentioned, will have a HARD time talking his way out of that one and may be the straw that broke the camel's back.
on the flip side, if we make the playoffs and are perennial 2nd round or better playoff team with curry being a big part of it, then the pick would be trivial.
take your pick.
right now, nobody is right or wrong.
I understand your view but I think you can at least evaluate the odds of different scenarios occuring and decide whether or not including the unprotected pick versus requiring lottery protection but giving up more to get that protection is worthwhile. That's exactly what GMs HAVE to do before completing trades.
it was mentioned before but we essentially bid against ourselves. it's always about now and not about long term. the only option chicago and curry had was to re-sign for the qualifying offer and then becoming unrestricted next summer. but we HAD to get curry now regardless of what we give up. so we gave up picks. all of this AFTER the jerome james signing. so you could say that impatience on isiah's part may be the reason we gave up more than we should have. i know, he's a 22 year old center. i know. he could be a monster. i know. BUT if he wanted to be a knick, we would've figured out a way to get him next summer. either via the full mle or a sign and trade where we didn't have to give up a ton of picks b/c chicago would be painted in a corner.
again, high risk and this is the position isiah has put us in. we decided not to pare down payroll so he's spending money but the results aren't there yet. so he's getting a little desperate for results, hence the jerome james signing. and now, giving up so many picks in the eddy deal. and this could all explode in our faces and set us back even further aka what isles has been saying.
hey, if eddy is 20/10 and a key piece to our deep playoff runs, then it's all good but the rationale behind giving up what we did is a bit off.
